Panning for Gold Part 2

January 12, 2026 By pete

Ken Miles. Riverside, Porsche RSK

Story and photos by Allen R. Kuhn

Read Part 1

As we begin Part 2 of Panning for Gold, the above shot defies explanation, from me anyway. I have four other similar shots that look like normal car pictures. Here, it looks like the car is in pan motion with those streaks. And, what about that wheel? I have never seen one like that before. We recently showed this picture to Pete Stout of Excellence magazine. His art director asked me if I did that in Photoshop. I said I hadn’t, but that I had a theory on why this happened.

Panning for Gold

January 5, 2026 By pete

No, Richie Ginther is not t-boning that massive pylon at Riverside in 1957. Note the nose of Richie’s Ferrari is visible through the pylon, another case for the beauty of panning.

Story and photos by Allen R. Kuhn

To pan or not to pan, aye, that is the question. Whether it is nobler to read the manufacturer’s name on the tire of a Ferrari going 247 kilometers per hour, or to sense the illusion of speed when your camera is set at 1/60 of a second. That is what a pan shot does best, to relish that vision of speed with focus and clarity.

Put on a Happy Face

May 5, 2025 By pete

When the artwork is more interesting than the chassis number.

By Pete Vack, photos by Jim Sitz and Allen R. Kuhn

VeloceToday originally ran this photo in September 2023, and in an effort to find the chassis number and owner of the 550 Spyder Richie Ginther drove one fine day at Santa Barbara, and perhaps the meaning of the Happy Face on the front, we asked our readers to help.

When Allen Met Graham

Carroll Shelby in John Edgar’s Ferrari 410S leads Dan Gurney in Frank Arciero’s Ferrari 375 Plus at Palm Springs on April 13, 1958. One of the many photos I shared with the Ferrari Archivist.

I would like to start this series of short stories – they are not Galleries as before – by telling a true story about Graham Gauld, and how he saved our skin when we were in Italy/France in 2006 for our seven-week tour of the Continent. The story really began in Maranello, so bear with me….

Those Lovely Italianate Aston Martins P2

March 25, 2024 By pete

Story and photos by Allen R. Kuhn

In my duology of Aston Martin at venues other than Palm Springs, my viewfinder did not locate too many of them on my sojourns around Southern California back in the ‘50s and ‘60s. I saw my first Aston Martin in 1956 and only a few more in 1957 and 1958. Since 99.9% of my shots will be of the DB3S model I’ll just call them Astons. This chapter will concentrate on the myriad of other racecourses located in our beautiful Southern California. True, most of our courses, eight out of the thirteen I attended, were on runways or large parking lots. That’s what you can expect from mostly desert locations.

My first sighting, shooting with my folks’ Kodak Pony 135 camera loaded with Kodachrome, was of Bob Drake, the winner of the main event at Pomona on October 21, 1956. It wouldn’t be until some time in 1957 that I would graduate to my beloved Canon IVS2 35mm camera.

Those Lovely Italianate Aston Martins

March 18, 2024 By pete

TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALLEN R. KUHN

On our trip down memory lane this week we will be gazing upon some of the beautiful Aston Martin “Chariots of Power” that I was able to capture through my viewfinder. All of those in this part were taken at Palm Springs between 1956 to 1958. I did not even discover one of them until a year ago. It was a photo taken at Pomona in early 1956 and was the first DB3S I ever shot. It was the winner of the main with Bob Drake driving. It will be featured in my Aston Martin Part 2 story.

Richie Ginther Tribute Part 1

August 29, 2022 By pete

Sometimes size does matter, as at Santa Barbara on June 1, 1958, when Richie Ginther got behind the wheel of John von Neumann’s ungodly beautiful #211 Ferrari 250 TR capturing 3rd OA, but 1st in DM. Ginther was bested that day by Lance Reventlow in his Scarab Chevy in 1st, and Max Balchowsky in the Buick Ol’ Yeller in 2nd. Both were class BM, where size does matter.

This is the first of two articles about Richie Ginther, a great driver who never quite got the press he deserved. Below is Allen Kuhn’s portrait of the driver, and we’ll follow that up with personal recollections from Jim Sitz, who knew Ginther very well. These are fleeting bios; for a really good look at Richie, we urge you to get a copy of Richard Jenkins’ “Richie Ginther, Motor Racing’s Free Thinker”. Both Kuhn and Sitz also contributed to Jenkins’ book. Ed.

A Pictorial Essay By Allen R. Kuhn

My pictorial essay for this week actually began as I searched my negatives for a particular car. I found out that the auction house RM Sotheby’s is offering the John Edgar Ferrari 410S s/n 0598 at the Monterey Car Week this month. Was there a story for VeloceToday.com here? Interview with a Race Queen

April 11, 2022 By pete

The Editor and the photographer apologize for this photo, which was the result of the sun being at the wrong end of the lens. However, it is well balanced and says a lot. Read on.

Marilyn Fox Halder, as interviewed by Allen R. Kuhn
Photos by Allen R. Kuhn unless otherwise noted.

Marilyn Fox loved dancing growing up, and was very attractive. She would follow a career making commercials and become a professional dancer finding work at the Sahara in Las Vegas. This led her to appear at the Millionaire’s Club in Los Angeles, CA. While there, she was introduced to Peter and Harry Rothschild, who owned Powerine Oil Company. They wanted to get the contract to supply fuel for the race tracks in Southern California and asked Marilyn if she would be interested in becoming a promoter of their products at races and other activities. With her natural beauty and love of automobiles, she thought it might be a fun thing to do and get paid.

Greatest American Grand Prix Drivers: The Top Ten

THE GREATEST AMERICAN F1 GRAND PRIX DRIVER?
It may not be who you think….

By Clyde Berryman

In motor racing, the great ‘schism’ between the ‘Old World’ (Europe) and the ‘New World’ (America) was pretty much settled by the end of the 1950’s. Racing in Europe began on open public roads as epitomized by the turn of the 19th-20th century city-to-city races before danger led to closed-circuit road racing where designated public roads were temporarily closed off for a race.

When road racing enjoyed a revival after World War II, Watkins Glen, New York held the first race in the fall of 1948. The next year, Bridgehampton, New York; Linden, New Jersey; Concord, California and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida joined Watkins Glen with races for the imported cars that were arriving on U.S. shores.
