Drivers at the Festival of Speed

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Jonathan Sharp, and on occasion, Hugues Vanhoolandt, have been snapping happy faces at Goodwood for many, many years. One of our favorite years for faces was 2014, and we presented both the FOS and Revival drivers in our gallery.

More than 10 years later, the drivers are still smiling. Says Sharp, “I enjoy spending time in the assembly area as you can really feel the atmosphere, the drivers definitely enjoy it, and the mechanics are under far less pressure than they would be at a race meeting so do not seem to mind us getting in their way.

Goodwood Revival 2024, Sharp Part 1

Boy did it rain. At one point I was thinking maybe I could do a feature on ‘Umbrellas at the Revival’ but this is Britain and rain does not usually stop play, or if it does then it is not for long.

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Due to my inability to be at two places at once (I will work on that) I was not able to photograph every driver, but the following are a selection of those that I did manage to catch. And something we note, happily, every year, in most cases, the drivers are smiling, joking, relaxed and in a great mood. Such is the magic that is the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Personalities at the Festival of Speed

Nigel Mansell and Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 11th Duke of Richmond.

Story and Photos by Jonathan Sharp

One of the privileges granted to accredited and fully insured (see last week’s article) photographers at the Festival of Speed is to be able to access the assembly areas in which the entrants in each group/class are gathered before being sent down to the hill start line. It is in the assembly area that I get my best chance of pointing my camera at some famous drivers and riders old and new.
