Owner Comments on Ferrari 250 LM 5909

July 1, 2024 By pete

Ferrari 250 GT/LM #5909, Phillip Island, turn 2. Vince Johnson photo.

The current owner comments on Ferrari 250 LM Chassis 5909

I had dreamed of having an LM since 1965 after seeing Australian driver Spencer Martin drive the Scuderia Veloce car (chassis 6321) to win every race they entered. Spencer went on to be Australian Champion Driver twice (1966-7) and competed very successfully against the international World Champion drivers in the Tasman Series. The Scuderia Veloce car was purchased by Ralph Lauren and he never sells anything, so that car was never going to be available.

South Australian Motorsport Series, 9-11 June

#10 TRT Racing (China), Li Quang / Jonathan Cecotto

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

The entry list had an Italian and international flavour at round two of the SA Motorsport Series held earlier this month. Featured over the weekend was a full grid of twenty EVO2 Huracáns competing in the second round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia. Held, appropriately, on the five-kilometre International Circuit at The Bend Motorsport Park, near Tailem Bend on the River Murray south-east of the state capital, this was the Trofeo teams’ first time racing in Australia. Local racer Keith Wong kept the South Australian connection strong, co-driving with Dr. Ma Chi Min in the Kam Lung Racing entry, car #83.

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 11-13 March

Story and Photos by Vince Johnson

After last year’s restrictions, spectators were back at the Victorian Historic Racing Register’s Phillip Island Classic, held on the sweeping circuit south of Melbourne. The perfect weather and long weekend holiday also saw over 400 entries, but shipping issues meant they were an all-Australian affair, although several overseas drivers had made the journey down to the sun.

Thursday was for free practice, the extra track time valuable to those who had missed last year’s competitor-only meeting. On Friday morning further practice and qualifying was followed by the first of the Regularity events and racing categories. [Read more…] about Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 11-13 March

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 2018

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 9-11 March 2018

Australia’s largest historic race meeting, organized by the Victorian Historic Racing Register, is held annually at the flowing Phillip Island circuit south of Melbourne. Decibels were in order all weekend, this year being the 50th anniversary of Formula 5000. Nine cars from New Zealand arrived to contest the International Challenge, reminiscent of the Tasman Series of the 60’s and 70’s where Grand Prix drivers from Europe enjoyed summer sun in the two countries during the northern winter’s off-season. Phillip Island Classic, 17-19 March 2017, Australia

Karanfilovski Alfa Romeo, turn 2.

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

Drivers from the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Belgium, Germany and New Zealand joined the Aussies at the 28th Phillip Island Classic on the weekend before the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. Attracted by the sweeping island circuit south of Melbourne, they enjoyed three days of racing across nineteen categories.

Following practice and qualifying, the oldest of them all, (car not driver) Alan Telfer’s 1926 Bugatti 37/37B was the most consistent of the forty-one competitors in the first Regularity matched-lap-times event on Friday afternoon. During the weekend, second places were earned by Gerard Knapp’s 1974 Alfa Romeo 1600 GT Junior and Bob Pinkerton’s 1955 Peugeot Belchamp GP. Others to do well were Trevor McPherson’s 3rd in his 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce, Ernst Luthi’s 4th in his 1971 Alpine Renault A110 and Peter Axford’s 1970 Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato. Richard Longes’ 1927 Bugatti 35B almost matched Telfer’s in the age stakes. [Read more…] about Phillip Island Classic, 17-19 March 2017, Australia

The first competitive hillclimb in South Australia, held in 1904 on the Norton Summit Road, was won by Ernest Rymill in his 15hp Darracq. The following year he made it two in a row. Sadly, Rymill’s Darracq wasn’t in the Barossa Valley this year for the Sporting Car Club of SA’s Vintage Collingrove, although the French were admirably represented by local stalwart Richard Creasy’s slightly younger Amilcar G.

Richard purchased the car in 1986 as the remains of a Morris powered special built in the 1960’s in Melbourne. It has been rebuilt with Amilcar components. The engine is a 1925 pressure fed 1985cc side valve and drives through its original 4 speed transmission. [Read more…] about Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb, South Australia, 6 October

Alfas Take Phillip Island by Storm

April 6, 2010 By pete

Alfa Romeo 159 was the star of the Phillip Island Classic. Photo and story by Vince Johnson.

Melbourne Australia, 19 – 21 March 2010.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Phillip Island Classic, the Victorian Historic Racing Register fittingly chose Alfa Romeo as the featured marque for the event. Held annually at the sweeping 4.4 km circuit south of Melbourne, the international stature of this meeting is well established. Its reputation is such that the Alfa Romeo factory, in its centenary year, sent one of its irreplaceable Alfettas, chassis #159.111, engine #159.221. Delving further into the big Delage

Photos by Vince Johnson

As we have seen, Miranda Seymour was able to obtain a ride in a very nice Delage D8S while in Australia. She sent us a photo of herself in the car, but none of the great Delage itself.
We solved the problem by asking VeloceToday contributor and reporter Vince Johnson to run over to Antony Simpson’s place and take a few photos of the Delage. Despite the size of Australia, it seems that Vince lived only about 20 minutes away. Vince returned not only with the photos for this article, but a brief history of the Delage as related by Mr. Simpson. As noted by Seymour, Simpson’s Delage is similar to Renee Friderich’s, and has its own fine and perhaps happier history. The following is the owner’s description of his Delage and its history.
