
One of the many world records of the week was the sale for $27,500,000 of the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider s/n 10709, all proceeds donated to charitable causes. It is the second most expensive car ever to be sold at public auction.

Monterey madness week is not only about Concours d’Elégance, Car club reunions, races at Laguna Seca,Tours on the Monterey Peninsula or social events. It is, for an increasing number, all about auctions. We will not list here all the world record prices broken during these sales but just take a subjective look at some interesting cars. proposed to the sale.

At Bonhams, one of the star lots was the 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa coupé by Vignale # 0313 EU. It realized $2,805,000, just above its lower estimate price.

At the other end of the market, the lovely Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, estimated between $55,000 and $75,000, sold in the middle of that range, for $63,800.

On show in Monterey was this 1935 Alfa Romeo 8C-35 Grand Prix which will be the star lot of this weekend’s Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale. It has been raced by no less than Tazio Nuvolari and Dick Seaman.

At Gooding, the 1961 Abarth 1000 Bialbero, formerly the property of Briggs Cunningham, driven in period by Bruce McLaren and Walt Hansgen, went for $302,500.

The Lamborghini Miura P400 Prototype chassis, as shown at the 1965 Turin Auto Salon, achieved $473,000.

Despite its tortuous history and a 250 GT engine installed in the 90s, this Ferrari 500 TRC s/n 0690 MDTR, sold for $3,080,000, some $780,000 more than its higher estimate.

Another highlight at Gooding was the Ferrari 250 GT LWB Tour de France s/n 0703 GT, 9th overall at the last Mille Miglia in 1957. It sold for $9,460,000. Will the new owner risk a car of this price in next year’s Mille Miglia?

The very exotic Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider s/n 14299 was commissioned by Luigi Chinetti for his wife Marion. Sold at $720,000.

RM Auctions held its annual sale in downtown Monterey. One of the star lots was the ex-Jim Kimberly pontoon-fenders Ferrari 375 MM spider s/n 0364 AM. No estimate available, but it sold for $9,075,000.

A Ferrari Classiche certification is always an added advantage when going on sale. That was the case of the 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial s/n 0418MD, sold for $3,520,000.

And $4,070,000 for the Ferrari 750 Monza s/n 0530M, with racing history and ten years of entries in the Mille Miglia Storica.

This strange looking 1938 Fiat 508 C received a new body by Geburth in 1955. VT already told the story of that car here : https://velocetoday.com/fiat-1100-geburth/ Sold for $55,000.

Two cars for the price of one! The Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta s/n 0038M was offered with the Vignale body, ordered by Jose Froilan Gonzales, mounted on this chassis in 1951 before a barchetta Touring style body was reinstalled in 1987. Sold for $3,080,000.

The Maserati Tipo 61 ‘Birdcage’ s/n 2461 is the 1960 Nürburgring 1000 km winner with Moss and Gurney. Seen here alongside the Lister ‘Knobbly’ of the same Cunningham stable, it went for $2,090,000.
