As We Promised–Bugatti Atlantic Update

August 18, 2010 By Lynch

The Second Edition of The Quail Motorcycle Gathering took place in bright sunshine at the Quail Lodge Golf Club on the day before Mothers Day, but the festivities began earlier. Kenny Roberts led a group of golfers in a game on Friday. That same day, 40-odd bikes took part in the Quail Motorcycle Tour, escorted by motorcycle officers of the California Highway Patrol. Ducati showed strong confidence in the organizers when they provided Quail Lodge President, Lawson Little, with a new 1200 Multistrada for the ride. Although this year's theme at the Desert Classic is mid-century American design in the Age of Chrome, there will be plenty of exotics, like Jack Vopal's Pegaso Z-102 Panoramica Coupe.

Believe it or not, there are occasional heartwarming automotive stories that have nothing to do with French or Italian cars. This one concerns Paris-born (to Brazilian parents) Gil de Ferran, who came to the United States to join Hall/VDS Racing in 1995. It won the Reims 12 Hours in 1965 for Pedro Rodriguez and Jean Guichet, was 2nd at the Bridgehampton 500 Kilometers (Pedro again) and had top-10 placings at Le Mans and Daytona in 1965 and 1966 respectively. It is shown in its Le Mans livery.

The Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue

The three major shows of the Monterey Peninsula automobile festival week have established distinctive personalities. The newcomer among them (2007), the CCoA has the widest range of vehicles, including hot rods (there was a vintage dragster this year), mini cars, motorcycles and other unexpected treasures, as well as the classics and vintage racers. The show had its first overseas entrant this year and a Good Humor ice cream truck even won a prize.

David and Ginny Sydorick have a soft spot for Zagato coachwork. This Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spyder is a fine example of that bodybuilder’s touch. It is the oldest car in the Sydorick’s significant collection of Zagato-bodied cars.
