September 17, 2019 By pete

Story by Pete Vack

Last week Jonathan Sharp attended this year’s Hampton Court Concours and found five of the most delicious Ferraris on hand. “Let’s just focus on those five,” suggested the Editor, and so he did. Then we highlighted what was most interesting about each one of the five cars presented. The result is below. [Read more…] about Five Ferraris Featured at Hampton Court

Ferrari 166 M S/N 0010 M

Story and Photos by Alan Boe

From the VeloceToday Archives, Jan 9, 2018

All old Ferraris have a story to tell but most never get the words out. That, however, is not the case with the magnificent little 166 MM Touring-bodied barchetta, s/n 0010 M, which had its story told twice in Cavallino and in the September 1996 edition of Classic and Sports Cars. It’s worth another look because this one of the most important Ferraris of them all. Ferrari historian and Pebble Beach Judge Alan Boe relates the story.

You may be surprised to find out what it’s like driving an early Ferrari. But before we get into the cockpit, let’s review some pertinent statistics that shed light on the performance and handling characteristics.

Delahaye by Chapron

September 10, 2019 By pete

From the VeloceToday Archives, October, 2011

By Ed McDonough

It seemed extraordinary to me doing the research for this series, reading a large number of period articles and reviews in notable journals, that many of these totally failed to mention who provided the body for some of the cars reviewed. Was it just a matter of routine that performance cars would have special bodies or could it have been that the reviewer didn’t know? After all, specialised car production was just that, and the history is complex.

August 17, 2019 saw the 34th annual edition of the Concorso Italiano, in the eleventh year of its stewardship by Tom McDowell. It is located on the rolling turf of the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course on the old Fort Ord military base, adjacent to Monterey Bay. To get right to the point, this is the largest single day Italian car show in the world, with over 800 cars in attendance. [Read more…] about Concorso Italiano 2019

Ballot Discussion Part 3

September 10, 2019 By pete

By Pete Vack

As we have reported earlier, Daniel Cabart and Gautam Sen have created the Ballot Bible, documenting the founder, the engineers, the heritage, the races and the cars. It is a huge work, with much new information, and in our three reports, we have barely scratched the surface. In this report we will describe the Ballot 2LS from Volume 1, and describe the scope of Volume 2. [Read more…] about Ballot Discussion Part 3

Jim Clark Museum Opens

September 3, 2019 By pete

Story by Graham Gauld

There has been a lot on the internet recently about the official opening of the Jim Clark Museum in Duns, Berwickshire, which took place last Thursday, August 29. For me it was a memorable occasion, not because it was devoted to Jim Clark’s life, but for the large numbers of people who turned up and who, in one way or another, had their lives touched by Clark.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, 2019

September 3, 2019 By pete

By Brandes Elitch

I can safely say that the annual Pebble Beach Concours is the most famous and prestigious show of its type in the world. Someone said that being chosen to show your car here is akin to being nominated for an Oscar. In this column, I will try to explain why this is the case.

At the outset we should recognize that this is a charitable endeavor. Last year, the show raised $2.1 million dollars, all of which stays on the Peninsula. Over the last 30 years, it has raised over $27 million for over 80 local organizations. An admission ticket costs $450 the day of the show. [Read more…] about Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, 2019

Monterey Auctions, 2019

August 27, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Alongside the various car shows, rallies and gatherings of all sorts, the numerous auctions held during the Monterey week always provides the temperature of the classic car market and a trend for the months to come.

Although new world auction records were achieved here and there for specific models, it seems that the time of crazy prices is over with many cars remaining unsold due to high estimates. Maybe it is good news for the real collector. [Read more…] about Monterey Auctions, 2019

The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, 2019

August 27, 2019 By pete

Story by Brandes Elitch
Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

August 16, 2019 saw the seventeenth year of the Quail Lodge automobile show, located in bucolic Carmel Valley, California, at the base of the Santa Lucia mountain range. Often described as a “garden party,” this is such an extraordinary event that it’s difficult for me to come up with a lead sentence to adequately describe the day.
