Michael T. Lynch at Pebble Beach, 2016

Vicki and Michael T. Lynch, Pebble Beach, 2016.

Story and photos by Michael T. Lynch

The Capstone

The Pebble Beach Concours is the emotional finish of Holy Week on the Monterey Peninsula. Events continue into the next week, but none can match the feeling of climax that the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance provides.

If your pilgrimage is five days or longer, the fall days are losing enough sunlight that it seems one is leaving in the summer and returning home in fall. Certainly, it is clear that another year has passed.

In the old days that would bother me. I used to think of the missed opportunities of the year gone by. The fact that the car in the back of my roofer’s shop didn’t turn out to be a round-door Wombat that I could buy for a fraction of its market value; the fact that another year had slipped away without taking part in the Monterey Historic Automobile Races as a participant, etc. I also liked to bitch about how many of my old buddies from years gone by were priced out of attending, more every year. Elitch, Vanhoolandt at The Quail

[Enjoy this superb interview with Stratos owner Mark Ketcham; please ignore the unfortunate background music that was impossible to avoid or eradicate. Ed.]

Story by Brandes Elitch
Photos and videos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Although I have attended this event for the last four or five years, I am continually amazed and delighted by the overall experience and I generally don’t use such superlatives, unless it is for a really spectacular car, motorcycle, artwork, piece of music, or woman. Regular readers will remember my column on the Quail Motorcycle show held a few months back, and my interview with organizer Gordon McCall. [Read more…] about Elitch, Vanhoolandt at The Quail

Pebble Beach with Hugues Vanhoolandt

Sunday morning, 6 am, the cars are waiting to be placed on the Pebble Beach lawn. Here is another creation of Michelotti, also on Fiat 1100 chassis, and shown at the 1953 Turin Auto Show but this time the coachbuilder is Vignale. It is back to the Pebble Beach Concours 61 years after its first appearance here.

In its 66th year, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was celebrating among other things the Ford GT40, Chapron, Delahaye, Bizzarrini and the centennial of BMW.

But the Concours is not just a gathering of cars on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
For the past twelve years there was also a Tour a few days before the Concours itself, where people can enjoy the cars in motion. Sadly, this year, the Tour had to be shortened due to the forest fires down Highway 1 towards Big Sur. Subsequently, the Tour was not counting for the concours and many cars did not show on Thursday.

Nevertheless, we can say that this year Concours was again of very high quality and we can’t wait to discover what will be celebrated at Pebble Beach in 2017!

[In his concurrent report from Pebble Beach, Michael T. Lynch discusses many of the below cars in detail…Ed.]

Delahaye was one of the featured make and Chapron was the highlighted coachbuilder. That is why you have here a 1947 Delahaye 175 S Chapron Le Dandy cabriolet and 1949 Delahaye 135 M Chapron cabriolet, the last one listed in the Postwar Preservation Class.

Michael T. Lynch at Monterey, 2016

August 30, 2016 By pete

For some, the Ferrari 206 S is one of the best looking Ferraris ever. Others think it looks like a P4 left out in the rain to shrink. This one was owned by the Swiss Filipinetti team and ran at Sebring in 1967. At the Nurburgring that year, it had a bad fire and ended up with famous French collector, Pierre Bardinon. Now with the Moghadam collection in Canada.

Another Holy Week has passed on the Monterey Peninsula, and once again, the aging historian and Vicki enjoyed an abbreviated schedule. It consisted only of the Pebble Beach Tour lunch stop in Carmel, The Quail, the Rolex Reunion and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. [Read more…] about Michael T. Lynch at Monterey, 2016

Peter Brock and the Amazing Triumph K Car

The K-car has always been one of my favorite designs – Peter Brock

High praise indeed! Peter Brock can include the Corvette Stingray, the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and the Hino Samurai in the portfolio of exciting cars he has been involved with. I first saw the Triumph TR-250K in person at the David Love Memorial event at Sonoma earlier this year. The sophisticated wedge-shaped profile of the car was simply elegant. The K-Car, on its looks alone, might have saved Triumph from oblivion, but it was never put into production.

And therein lies a tale… [Read more…] about Peter Brock and the Amazing Triumph K Car

The Last Refuge of the Enthusiast

Yep, this one has correct hose clamps on the radiator…

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Let us make no mistake: the upper end of the classic car hobby has always been for the very wealthy. But at one time there was a discrete middle class who could afford to own the lower end of the upper end, perhaps a Dino 246 GT or a Maserati 3500 or a Lancia Aurelia in good shape. But eventually even the lower end sports cars became ultra-expensive, out of the reach of the normal enthusiast. Those days are gone and probably gone forever. So what is left for the real car enthusiast who has a family, a mortgage and a moderate income?

Between his coverage of Goodwood, Salon Prive and Windsor Castle, Jonathan Sharp took the time to attend a down- to-earth-event at a golf course near Silverstone. Ed. [Read more…] about The Last Refuge of the Enthusiast

The “Historics” is a catch-all phrase given to the multiple events occurring during “Car Week” on the Monterey Peninsula, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Historic Car Racing at Laguna Seca, the Quail Lodge extravaganza, and the Concorso Italiano, among others. Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, 2016 Part 1

August 23, 2016 By pete

Just to remember what Ferrari said.

Photostory by Alessandro Gerelli

The Oldtimers Grand Prix at the Nurburgring has been covered by Alessandro Gerelli since 2002 and is always a refreshing contract to the Monterey Car Week. What is remarkable is that so many of the great Grand Prix and sports racing cars keep returning to the Ring, always in the best of condition and often with new owners. The old never gets old and is newly appreciated by succeeding generations of owners and enthusiasts. Ed. [Read more…] about Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, 2016 Part 1

Oldtimer Grand Prix 2016 Part 2

August 23, 2016 By pete

....not only big but also rich !!!!!

Photostory by Alessandro Gerelli

In previous reports, Gerelli has usually made a split between the Ferraris and Maseratis at the Ring and does so this year as well. “If many of the old cars are the same, the photos are always different,” says Gerelli. The annual event was held on August 12-14. [Read more…] about Oldtimer Grand Prix 2016 Part 2
