Norbert McNamara and Friends
I was thinking about one of Norb’s Abarths when I stumbled upon this page of wonderful remembrances. Norbert would have chuckled that my comment follows that of Mr. Jonathon Till. Norbert and Sabra were both clients and close friends. I owned Showpiece Detailing and Restoration until the mid 1990’s. I believe I worked on all of Norb’s cars including preparing and presenting both the Monterverdi and the ATS for Pebble Beach, alongside Mr. Till, Jeremy Goodspeed, and Ward Rose. I think in one of the late years we took Norb’s TVR to Pebble Beach; but I’m not sure the paint was dry nor all the bolts that held the body to the chassis were tight.

Luigi Chinetti and Michael Lynch presented a history of the Chinetti family and North American Racing Team in Hanger K at the airport on Friday afternoon. Besides the audience of 200, there were some NART cars in attendance as well. This Ferrari 512 M, chassis 1020, finished third at Le Mans, driven by Sam Posey and Tony Adamowicz. The car was later driven to several world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats by Luigi Chinetti, Jr., Paul Newman, Graham Hill and Milt Minter. Credit: Garret Vreeland

The sixth edition of the Santa Fe Concorso took place over three days under beautiful Southwestern skies. Despite the good weather, wonderful cars and great fellowship, the event was poignant because of the loss last May of journalist/racer/philosopher Denise McCluggage who was a Santa Fe resident and involved with the Concorso from the beginning. That feeling was tempered because all of us knew a life well lived when we saw one, and you couldn’t go far without feeling Denise’s presence. Thoughts on Ford and Chev Engines in Ferraris

Bowtie Ferraris:
Chevy-engined Ferraris from the 1950s and 60sIn the February 10, 2015 edition of VeloceToday, author Michael Lynch reviews the book called “Bowtie Ferraris, Chevy-engined Ferraris from the 1950’s and 60’s,” written by Randy Cook. Mr. Lynch is very knowledgeable about Ferrari; I am not. During the Monterey Rolex Reunion in August, I met Randy at the Quail Motorsports Gathering show, “The Legend of the Automobile.” I was intrigued why a 250 GT coupe would have American Racing mags, and when I looked inside and saw the shifter, I knew that there was an American V8 under the hood. It is possible that this book could be mistaken for one of those dreaded coffee table books. The layout, art, style, sizes (9.75 by 12 inches) all say coffee table. The subject, Lamborghini Supercars, is one that might appear as a title on the remainder shelf at B&N.

But as they say never read a book by its cover. [Read more…] about Book Review: Lamborghini Supercars 50 Years

Comment date 2015/09/16 Simon Moore: Motoring’s Sherlock Holmes Story ran March 2009 My father, Art Stump, had a bit of involvement with the Alfa at Indianapolis after the war. He also worked on other Alfas throughout his Career. After his death, I cleaned out his shop and discovered a box of pistons (that I recall him telling me about) that are marked Alfa. Wonder if they’d be of use to some one in the Alfa world? I have photos ready to go if any interest.
Thank you. Al Stump stump918@gmail.com

Yes George Stecher did the driving scenes for Darren’s character Casey Owens. These scenes were originally driven by my father (Dave MacDonald) but after his death in the ’64 Indy 500 George was called in to reshoot them. Citing sensitivity concerns Universal also removed all but one of my father’s speaking parts in the movie. Rmac

There was more racing to take place in the Bois de Boulogne in the years following the 1945 event. The coupe de la Resistance on May 30, 1946 shaped up to be a promising re-match between Wimille and Sommer.

As can be seen from the above image, Hugues Vanhoolandt rarely misses a beat or someone’s mechanical misfortune. His selection of thousands of images taken at Goodwood this year had to be narrowed down to only 25 images; certainly not fair for him or our readers. So, have at it…. Goodwood sights and sounds

Race meeting programs normally have a picture of a racing car on the front cover. No racing cars on the cover for this year’s Goodwood Revival Meeting program. This year’s cover? Frozen Fish Fingers. Frozen Fish Fingers! Why? I will explain in a sentence or two. [Read more…] about Jonathan Sharp at Goodwood

Goodwood Side Shows

Hugues Vanhoolandt gives us a traditional Goodwood paddock scene.

Sometimes life is rough. Like when, once a year, two of our finest photographers/reporters attend the same event. What is an editor to do? Fortunately each covers Goodwood with their very unique perspectives, even when shooting the same scene at the same time. Goodwood is home base for Jonathan Sharp, who is as addicted to WWII planes as he is to vintage cars. Therefore his comments and photos reflect this home game attitude and love of flying. For Belgium-based Hugues Vanhoolandt, he covers the sideshows with humor and photos that rarely need explanation.

We give each their own show and here we combine the most interesting sideshow images from both photographers. We alternated their photos; after all all’s fair in love and war. [Read more…] about Goodwood Side Shows

Many thanks! Just a couple of comments:– At the Spanish GP, the last one of ’54 season, Lancia came with two iconic D50 (chassis nº 0001 and 0002), for Ascari and Villoresi respect.: they were fast but fragile and both retired early. There is a Castellotti biography titled “Un cuore rubato”, writen in Italian language, by noted historian Cesare de Agostini. Manel Baró
