This weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix was more or less the end of the season. Sebastian Vettel has for all practical purposes clinched the title. Yes, there is a mathematical chance that Button could catch up, but it would involve the Brit winning every race and the German gaining no points. Sebastian Vettel has solidified his title effort with a remarkable weekend at Monza where he made the effort of dominating an event look easy. The young German has proved without a doubt that the title of Meister has been passed from the previous generation and the Red Bull driver is not some lucky rookie, but the real deal. It didn’t look like that claim could be made when he was out dragged on the straight by Fernando Alonso, much to the joy of the thousands of tifosi who crowded the circuit, but just a little bit further down the track and Vettel walked away from the Ferrari and wasn’t challenged again.

Belgian Grand Prix 2011

The event at Spa held no major surprises in that the Red Bull duo of Vettel and Webber made short shrift of the competition. Although Webber made what has become a normal start for him and faltered, losing about five positions while Nico Rosberg surprised everyone by rocketing past Vettel into a lead that didn’t last.

Pirelli Wins

Like most of the F1 events this year, Hungary was a race of tires, or choices thereof. Give a team enough choices and fifty percent of the time they will screw it up. For McLaren, it was German GP winner Hamilton whose handlers opted for the wrong options. Also for McLaren, it was Jenson Button’s team who got the combination right and went on to win. Simple as that. Hamilton had to settle for fourth after a drive-through penalty.

Ferrari Finds Speed, Finally
Grand Prix of Britain

Fernando Alonso did his best to convince everyone that he was worth every Euro the scuderia is throwing at him and brought Ferrari their first victory of the 2011 season in a typically damp British Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel led during the first half of the race, getting the jump on his pole sitting team mate, causing groans of “not again” from the dignified fans and more guttural shouts of “che cazzo” from tifosi. But the result was enough to put Red Bull on notice that the last ten races will not be a cake walk. Hopefully.

Snooze Fest

Seems like this author took a bit of a beating for an editing oversight that caused Jenson Button fans to cry foul over a win at Montreal when “their” driver won. I’m happy to report that we’ve returned to our regularly scheduled programming and Sebastian Vettel is once again the winner of a grand prix. We’ve only seen this happen six times this year already. Happy?

Weekends in the late spring are usually spent on one of two main activities. There is the productive side, endless honey-do lists, grass that needs cutting, brakes that need changing, and any other activity that can only be done on the weekend as work precludes either the time or the energy to needed to tackle the list. And then there is the non-productive side, loafing on the couch, having an adult beverage (or seven) with friends and turning on the selective hearing when it is suggested to move one’s “fat ass” off the couch.

McLaren challenges, but Vettel prevails; Welcome back, Bob

Sebastian Vettel did something different this weekend, for the first time in memory, the pole sitter did not win at Barcelona. He also needed to actually work for this win, holding off a hard charging Lewis Hamilton who was hot on the German’s rear wing for the closing laps. The Brit could not find a way around for the win. History will likely show that this was one more incremental step for the Red Bull driver’s 2011 championship, but those that watched the race know that this was closer racing than has been seen so far this season.

Turkish Grand Prix

Several years ago, Ferrari fans were perfectly happy with routines. Michael Schumacher would have a flawless qualifying session, have an uneventful race and cross the line with a gap to second place that could occasionally be measured with a calendar, rather than a stop watch. But should the same type of performance happen from another driver and team combination, the talk quickly changes to how F1 has lost its magic and it is more about the money than the show. It was about the money back then, too, but one didn’t feel like a complete futz for spending $30 for a coffee cup with the scudetto on the side of it when your team was winning.
