A Bad Day for Ferrari, a Good Day for Webber

As runner ups to the raging Red Bulls, Ferrari had half a chance this weekend. Alonso had qualified in third and put his car on the second row, Massa in row four. An early puncture put Massa near the back of the pack from where he would not recover, seemingly off form. The recent unscheduled flight of Mark Webber’s Red Bull highlighted at least two issues:

One, that the new regulations which were put in place for increased cockpit safety measures were certainly worthwhile; and two, Mark Webber has been involved in an increasing number of incidents.

There is still something special when the circus comes to town, and when the circus is F1 and the town is Monaco, people tend to be overwhelmed by not only the atmosphere, but also the bar tab. What do you mean that a glass of champagne was 30€, and it was even non-vintage? But even the common bubbly flows like water on a certain weekend in May every year, and the team that seemed to be doing the most celebrating was Red Bull racing who left the principality with a perfect result. McLaren Tops China in the Rain

There were two camps that were excited about the race in Shanghai this weekend. McLaren was able to capitalize on tire strategy and left the field behind by finishing one-two. The race promoters were also excited because with the rain, the camera angles were low and no one really should have noticed that the stands were empty, except on the main straight. If you Tivo’d the race, go back and compare it to the first couple of years that the race was held there. See anything missing? People maybe?

Red Bull Racing seems to have fixed their reliability issues and achieved maximum points with Vettel leading Mark Webber to a surprising 1-2 finish. It was surprising in that both cars actually finished, somewhat unexpectedly based on rounds one and two. Jenson Button had his laughs on his old team as to why he didn’t stick around at Brawn by winning the Australian Grand Prix with the McLaren team. The reigning world champion was able to capitalize on the decision to go out on slicks ahead of the field and put the cruise control on.

The Shell Ferrari Historics will begin 2010 at the Cavallino Classic, at Palm Beach International Raceway, on January 21 and 22, 2010.

For 2010, the purpose of the Shell Ferrari Historic series will remain unchanged, to allow the drivers of historic Ferrari race cars (and selected others: Maserati race cars and pre-war Alfas) to enjoy their cars in a safe competitive environment on historic tracks in North America, with the maximum track time possible.

Fangio aside, F1 has always been a young man’s sport, but today cradle-robbing is a serious industry. Abu Dhabi’s new sports complex was the scene of the fourth victory this year for the 21 year old Sebastian Vettel. It was not just the number but the manner—convincing in each case. Emotional, his boyish bursts of enthusiasm are well deserved and well placed and one suspects that behind that toothy, winning grin is a calculating, tough Germanic genius. Last year Vettel was the comingman, but no more, he has arrived. We have been given notice.
