We hadn’t seen a 1900 Series IV Touring in a number of years, and have never seen one in such wonderful condition as Scott Klion’s 1957 coupe. In the 1980s-90s, while the world was going great guns over Alfa Giuliettas, Giulias, and 2600 Spiders, these late Touring coupes tended to be overlooked and under-restored. They were all powered (an optimistic verb) by the same heavy, tall, 1900 cc engine with only 115 hp, not well-matched to the lovely body. Although the bodies were aluminum, the chassis and steel support frames took a rust beating, while the interiors decomposed into thin air. The well-used engines were often used as boat anchors. Not exactly restoration material.
So when Klion’s Alfa appeared at Le Belle Macchine d’Italia, we took another look, and then another, and yet another. Each time it was more beautiful. The lines are not only pure classic Italian, but possibly the best Touring had to offer in the era. Rick Carey noted that Touring did a fantastic job with the proportions made difficult due to the tall engine. The silver finish helps to accentuate the lines, versus the typical Alfa red.
Our thanks to Scott Klion for bringing out this classic Alfa.
