Italian Car Passion, Autoworld Museum, Brussels Part 1

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA with its “assistenza” car.

Taking a page from the Simeone Foundation, this year’s Autoworld Museum in Brussels created life-like dioramas to for a stunning Italian backdrop to 60 great Italian cars. Here we see an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA with its “assistenza” car.

Italian Car Passion, Autoworld Museum, Brussels

The Autoworld Museum in Brussels devoted its last 2015 special exhibition to “la bella macchina italiana”, featuring some 60 cars ranging from the 50s to this day, representing the most emblematic machines produced by mass manufacturers, renowned coachbuilders or talented craftsmen.

In order to provide the visitor with the proper ambiance, a small “piazza” was been recreated as well as the typical narrow streets of an Italian city, with its traditional architecture.

In this exhibit, this Lamborghini Miura, a 1972 P400 SV version, is the link between the prolific 50’s and 60’s and the supercars of today.

It’s been 30 years since Keke Rosberg won the first Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix held on the streets of Adelaide. To commemorate the anniversary, the Sporting Car Club of South Australia assembled an impressive line-up of F1 cars of the era to headline a 200-strong field of race and road cars for a weekend of sprints in the city’s Victoria Park.

The Brighton Run, 2015

Brown Brother of London offered Tricycles and a light steam car. However as they did not have any manufactures premises, they offered the American Whitney as the Brown Whitney and also some cars made by Star. This Quadricycle, entered by Mr. David Oakley, hails from 1899 and is powered by a 2.25 cylinder engine.

The sun came out and it was lovely and warm in Brighton today. Not the usual weather for the London to Brighton Run. It is November but this year there was a blazing sun and I needed a sun blocker. My first memory of the event is watching the cars pass from the side windows of my father’s Austin 1300 whilst parked on the A23 just outside of Brighton; it was usually raining. The first competitive hillclimb in South Australia, held in 1904 on the Norton Summit Road, was won by Ernest Rymill in his 15hp Darracq. The following year he made it two in a row. Sadly, Rymill’s Darracq wasn’t in the Barossa Valley this year for the Sporting Car Club of SA’s Vintage Collingrove, although the French were admirably represented by local stalwart Richard Creasy’s slightly younger Amilcar G.

Richard purchased the car in 1986 as the remains of a Morris powered special built in the 1960’s in Melbourne. It has been rebuilt with Amilcar components. Automedon is a two day event held every year in the exhibition center of the Bourget Airport near Paris. This year to celebrate its 15th edition, the main theme of the event was Simca and the Club Simca France presented many Simcas of the 40s and 50s.

But as usual, in the parking lot outside, many production cars, including Italians, Germans and Americans, attracted the attention of the enthusiastic visitors, and for us, perhaps even more fun than the show itself!

Nice cars, nice weather, lot of people…thoroughly enjoyable!

Ferrari and McCluggage Honored at Santa Fe

Luigi Chinetti and Michael Lynch presented a history of the Chinetti family and North American Racing Team in Hanger K at the airport on Friday afternoon. Besides the audience of 200, there were some NART cars in attendance as well. This Ferrari 512 M, chassis 1020, finished third at Le Mans, driven by Sam Posey and Tony Adamowicz. The car was later driven to several world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats by Luigi Chinetti, Jr., Paul Newman, Graham Hill and Milt Minter. Credit: Garret Vreeland

The sixth edition of the Santa Fe Concorso took place over three days under beautiful Southwestern skies. Despite the good weather, wonderful cars and great fellowship, the event was poignant because of the loss last May of journalist/racer/philosopher Denise McCluggage who was a Santa Fe resident and involved with the Concorso from the beginning. That feeling was tempered because all of us knew a life well lived when we saw one, and you couldn’t go far without feeling Denise’s presence. Sometimes life is rough. Like when, once a year, two of our finest photographers/reporters attend the same event. What is an editor to do? Fortunately each covers Goodwood with their very unique perspectives, even when shooting the same scene at the same time. Goodwood is home base for Jonathan Sharp, who is as addicted to WWII planes as he is to vintage cars. Therefore his comments and photos reflect this home game attitude and love of flying. For Belgium-based Hugues Vanhoolandt, he covers the sideshows with humor and photos that rarely need explanation.
