As the Quail Lodge prepares for the Quail Motorcycle Gathering, this is the quality of entry they hope for. This Ducati 750 Imola is thought to be Paul Smart’s backup bike for the 1972 Imola 200, which Smart won, putting Ducati on the road to unmatched success in World Superbike racing. In 2003, a new event was added to the August Monterey Peninsula Automotive Festival Week, The Quail–“A Motorsports Gathering.” Since then, this brilliant combination of cars, cuisine, celebrities and cognoscenti, set on the verdant grass of the golf course that is part of the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club, has become the hottest ticket during the week, with a sellout taking place each January in less than two hours. Egads! Why is a Chinese car featured in our French and Italian classic car magazine?
First of all, it is a fascinating and important collectible. Second, it is the first classic legally imported to the U.S. from China. Third, Don Williams of the Blackhawk Collection has spent years making this event happen. Lastly, and most important to our readers with classic cars, Williams thinks that by cultivating such trades with the vast and still growing Chinese market, there may be potential for increased sales of classic cars to China.

We are asking for comments from authors, publishers, readers, historians, and others with experience in this subject. Please use the Letters to the Editor section of this post to provide your opinions. The following are a few questions to get the forum going:
Should serious automobile history and biography books and articles include proper documentation such as notes and bibliographies?
Why are the vast majority of automobile books undocumented?
What automotive titles are known to be properly documented?
What kinds of documentation should be used?
Is documenting entirely up to the authors?
What do publishers recommend?
What do readers want?
Does publishing documented works help increase the stature of automobile writers and historians?
Does the lack of proper documentation in automotive history and biography lessen the importance of the work, and author?
