Abarth Fiat Punto delighted crowds.

Photos and story by Alessandro Gerelli

Same old show for most of the Italians

The “Salon International de l’Auto” of Geneva together with the similar exhibitions of Detroit, Frankfurt and Tokio are the most important world events where the car manufacturers present their new projects and the coachbuilders their ideas.

This year in Geneva there were many cars designed to solve or, better, to reduce the pollution problem we have everywhere: hybrid with an electric or hydrogen engine.

Only minor changes or limited edition version of existing models were seen on the Italian cars. Only Maserati presented a new Granturismo, which is similar to the old Coupe but with a more aggressive look and recalls in the front to the Maserati of the years 50s and 60s.

No news from Fiat, because the new Bravo has already been presented everywhere: it is a very nice car in competition with the small models of the German BMW and Audi. In Italy there is a great eagerness for the new 500, but in Geneva there was only a very nice example of the old 500.

Alfa Romeo has presented a diesel engine version of the nice spider, now also available with the automatic gearbox.

Lancia, waiting for the new Delta, has presented a rich Momo designed version of the Ypsilon.

Ferrari had a large stand with all its updated production, including a limited version of the Scaglietti to celebrate its 60 years.

Lamborghini was present with both the Murcielago and the Gallardo.

Very significant the presence in its own stand of Abarth with a Punto: shall we expect a new life for this very historic name? Click here for more on Abarth.

Abarth scorpion at the Abarth stand. Gerelli wonders if the magic of the name will be enough.

The Alfa Spider now comes with a diesel option.

Nope, not the new 500 but the old one. Still waiting.

The new Fiat Bravo.

Nice grey clor for the Lamborghini Gallardo.

While the Murcielago looks stunning in white.

The only new Italian car was the Maserati Gran Turismo.
