Switzerland, with only 7 million citizens, is a small country, but nevertheless, many Ferraris can be found here. There are several major Swiss Ferrari collections but the average Swiss Ferrari owner has one or two products from Maranello in his garage. Apart from two large Swiss Ferrari Clubs, there is also a Dino Owners Club, plus a number of smaller groups, both in the French and in the German speaking parts of the country. Additionally, many of the ten official Ferrari dealers organise their own meetings for customers. Since motor racing is still almost completely banned in Switzerland (after the Le Mans disaster in 1955) some of the Ferrari agents invite their clients to race tracks in Italy, Germany or other neighbouring countries. A few years ago, the official Ferrari / Maserati dealer for the canton of Berne, Garage Nemeth, began a Ferrari meeting in the beautiful historic village of Aarberg, 15 miles west of Berne. This year, the Nemeth meeting took place on Sunday, 4 August 2002.

Unfortunately the one-day Ferrari show was marred by constant heavy rain or rather a deluge. Weather was the key factor all day and there was rarely an hour with clear skies. No doubt this was the reason for the smaller crowd as compared to previous years. But the weather didnt stop hundreds of hardy fans and enthusiasts who made their way to the historic village with its beautiful old houses and the intact city center. Only Ferraris were allowed to park on the cobble-stoned area in front of the historic, Bernese character buildings.

One hundred and eleven Ferraris were observed throughout the day. Naturally there were many newer ones but surprisingly a few old ones also showed up in Aarberg. An unrestored red 250 GT Coup Pinin Farina was the oldest car at the meeting. With their sexy and sensuous lines, two red Dino 246 GTs caught the attention of many people. A well-known Ferrari at Swiss meetings is the shortnosed 275 GTB with S/N 06949. It has belonged to the same industrialist for many years. This car was also shown at the Castle Schwetzingen Concours d'Elgance in 2001. Painted in an unusual non-metallic dark grey, a 365 GT 2+2 was also among the older Ferraris. These cars are sometimes nicknamed "Queen Mary" because they are quite huge. A black 330 GTC and a very nicely maintained dark blue 365 GTC completed the picture. But the author also observed a red Daytona Berlinetta, three Berlinetta Boxers and a rare fiberglass-bodied 308 GTB at the event.

Chassis numbers of the current Ferrari production are now in the 129XXX range and one brand new 575 F1 Maranello with such a high serial number appeared at the Aarberg event. Due to the heavy rain, the owner of an F40 decided to leave the meeting quite early. Of note was also a 348 Challenge which had a huge rear wing. It was parked close to a 308 GTB whose owner had decided to modify the body of his car along the lines of a 288 GTO.

Despite the poor weather, everyone was in fine spirits and there was plenty of time to meet friends and talk Ferrari. Organiser Nemeth and his enthusiastic crew will certainly produce another big Ferrari meeting in the charming city of Aarberg in August 2003. Let's just hope that there will be less rain next year.
