Shops and garages all over the United States are now putting the final touches to the hundreds of Ferraris which will be featured at this year's Cavallino Classis XI, January 23-27 in Palm Beach Florida.
At Classic and Sport, hidden away in Edinburg, Virginia, the Lusso of Watts Hill (S/N 5593) and the 400 S/A Spider (S/N and Motor number 2331, internal number 14SA) owned by Peter Kalikow are receiving attention just prior to the event.
John Whittington turns a careful wrench on Hill's Lusso Tipe 168 motor. Nerve racking work, requiring a both a great deal of skill and patience. Hill plans to enter the Lusso in the Coppa Bella Macchina, meaning EVERYTHING has to be in absolutely perfect working order.
Beauty and trophy-winning touches are in the detail. The 400 S/A is replete with the kind of details that make these cars so desirable. Note the optional twin Heuer chronographs attached to the console. Classic and Sport is also well known for the quality of the leather interior restoration; note the fine needlework on the leather dashboard.
The Kalikow 400 is one of the few Ferraris left in the world to use Solex carburetors. Oh, yes, they were on the car right out of the factory. It wasn't the only one, either, but most Solex equipped Ferraris were changed to Webers either by Chinetti or later owners. "Solexes aren't bad carburetors," said Whittington, "just not quite as good as Webers".
After several intense years of restoration at Classic and Sport, this rare 400 convertible placed third at Pebble Beach in 2001. It should be one of the stars of this year's Palm Beach Cavallino Classic XI.
