Another year for the world's most famous Concours d'Elegance, and this year
Alessadro Gerelli was there for VeloceToday.
The Villa d'Este, situated near Lake Como, was the premier post war Italian
concours, and served as a suitable setting to feature the beautiful post war
Italian designs, still copied throughout the world.
As can be seen, there were a number of Zagato bodied Ferraris in the show,
including a very rare Spada designed FZ93, a much more successful effort
than the earlier Chinetti commissioned cars built in the 1970s.
The ex-Agnelli Ferrari, recently and hesitantly restored, made an overseas
appearance at the event. We say hesitantly because while it would have
been nice to keep the original paint, it was, in fact, removing itself
from the body in large chunks. Something had to be done, and so it was.
After a successful tour of European shows in 2002, the Ferrari 342 America PF Cabriolet was again present at Villa d'Este, to everyone's delight, and much in keeping with what the event was so famous for in the early 1950s.
Maserati's car of the kings, the fabulous 5000 GT series, was represented
by a somewhat ungainly Frua bodied car built for the Aga Khan.
Alessandro, and VeloceToday, will have more on the event in the next couple of weeks.
Zagato's body on the 330GT for Chinetti just didn't do the trick, then or now. Zagato's designs were
usually either drop dead right (Aston Martin) or way off the mark.

0234 AL was shown
again at the Villa d'Este event, but what else does one do with one of the most
beautiful cars in the world?
|
Ordered and driven
by the late Gianni Agnelli and found in remarkable, unrestored condition,
0355 AL has recently been restored for the first time.
|
Interior of 0355 AL, very rich browns and reds.
|
Ercole Spada did this
for Zagato in 1993, based on a Testa Rossa. One of the "right on" Zagato designs.
|
The Costin-Zagato Maserati 450S, which had it's 15 minutes of fame at Le Mans in 1957, Moss up.
Hot, noisy, but fast, it then went to Minnesota for a while to cool its heels.
|
450S engine, looking, of course, several light years better than it did at Le Mans.
|
Frua, who had
created some of the loveliest Maserati A6G 2000s, went a bit overboard
for the Aga Khan.
|
Simple interior
of the ex-Khan Maserati 5000 GT belies the busy exterior details.
