Cavallino, Take Two

After two days at Moroso, Alessandro Gerelli paid a visit to the Cavallino Classic. His hotel was located in Palm Beach, and he had a chance to check out real estate. It was, as expected, "terribly high", but "these are about the same prices you pay for a nice big apartment in Sanremo on the Italian Riviera or Nice in France’s Cote Azur." Then it was back to Ferraris again.

"On Saturday, I went to the Breakers, a wonderful hotel in Palm Beach, where the Cavallino Classic contest took place. I expected to see more cars and a larger display area with the cars more spread out."

Gerelli noted with interest the ex-Wayne Sparling Ferrari Abarth, two Superamericas "and the 355AL and 490AM, with their serial number on the plate to avoid any possibility of confusion."

Gerelli is a Dino fan and was pleased to see so many in attendance. "The number of Dino 246GT, mainly in GTS version, was remarkable."

"All the cars were in outstanding conditions and the work of the judges has been very difficult." But what about American over-restoration? Gerelli sees little difference between the cars in Europe and America. "Over-restoration is nowadays common both in Europe and in USA. But I have seen the originals and I know that they were not as they are now. Colors are often improbable, interiors smell of too much leather! My idea of a good example of a Ferrari is the Dino 196 at Moroso (0790) because it looked very original."

"One last point: I was astonished to see how many production Maserati and Ferrari you can see around in Palm Beach and surroundings: it is for sure a very important market for Ferrari!"

The ex-Wayne Sparliing Ferrari Abarth, 0262M, was a feature attraction. The body was entirely recreated by Sparling, in the same manner as the original panel beater.
