Vanhoolandt: Every year, Lord Mach finds something else to divert his audience. This year he
celebrated the 110th anniversary of the first cycling Tour de France in 1903 and its 100th running. Period cars were on show like the famous Citroën Traction Avant.

Sharp: English Electric Canberra PR9, the only one flying in Europe. The Canberra entered service in 1951 and was finally retired in 2006 making it the longest-serving RAF aircraft in history. This example was built in 1959.

Sharp: In the 1950s the British Movie industry made a very popular series of films about the antics of a particularly rowdy girls' public school by the name of St Trinians. They proved to be very popular and are all good clean fun (unlike the recent remakes). At various times the events or interviews were interrupted by the mass arrival of the troublesome girls singing the school song.

Sharp: The Bugatti Type 51 A of Madame Anne Cecile Itier. She started racing in 1926 and was best known at the time for driving her 4 cylinder Bugatti Type 37A. However following her divorce in 1930, she ordered a Type 51A which she raced over the next five years before retiring, and had the car rebodied as a roadster with a less powerful Type 38 engine fitted. The car has now been restored back to its racing specification using an original Grand Prix body and engine.

Sharp: 60th Anniversary of the conquering of Everest by Sherpa Tensing and Edmund (now Sir) Hilary. During the weekend the summit which was part of the entrance to the Rolex Driver Club, was manned accordingly.

Vanhoolandt: In order to celebrate the Tour de France, some scenes of the French way of life were recreated like the famous ‘Bar Tabac.’

Sharp: Nick Swift’s 1965 Mini Cooper S as raced in the St Mary's trophy. The Swift team is dressed as the robbers as featured in the original movie The Italian Job. On the reverse side of each of the overalls were famous lines from the film. ‘Leave the beer leave the beer!’ (Charlie Croker). ‘Big, you do not know how to spell BIG!’ (Camp Freddie). ‘Everybody in the whole world is bent.’ (Mr. Bridger), and, ‘I hope he likes Spaghetti.’ (Mr. Bridger)

Sharp: The British worker always appreciates beauty. The Cisitalia 202MM Nuvolari Spyder of Ian Daglish, as previously seen at this year's Salon Prive, appeared at the festivities.

Sharp: The Itier Roadster body and Type 38 engine were given a new chassis after the Type 51A (see above photo) was restored.
NASA may still be flying two highly modified WB-57s.
Lord Mach might have a better shot at breaking the sound barrier in the Canberra than in the Tour de France-celebrating Traction Avant.
Lovely coverage. Cheers for the photogs and commentators should be ear shattering.
The photo above of the P-51 is done in the colors of the 361st Fighter Group at Little Walden during WWII. The plane is named “Ferocious Frankie” and was flown by Lt. Col. Wallace Hopkins of Washington, GA. He had six victories. He was the first CO of the 350th SQ of the 353rd FG training at Baltimore in 1943. He had a disagreement with the 353rd’s CO and moved over to the 361st where he was the exec. My father was the flight surgeon of the 350th and being fellow Georgians they were very close. I also knew “Hop” well and heard many of his flying stories.
Mr. Canipelli’s fascinating story illustrates the breadth of the interests and enthusiasms of VeloceToday readers. Thank you Mr. Canipelli and Pitti Vacchio, our own Conte di Villa Veloce.
As a light-hearted aside to the photo captions, Lord March has often used ideas from British TV and films of a suitable period to enliven proceedings at Goodwood. One such film was Carry On Cabby which was an early sixties comedy about a taxi business staffed with only very attractive girls all driving Ford Cortinas. Hence the photo above of the girls dressed in red with a couple of sailors captioned “We want you in the Navy…” and the one at the top of the girl adjusting her lipstick in the mirror.
Almost as sexy as that line of Maserati 250F rear ends !
