Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt
Having attended the Goodwood Revival many times over the years, one wonders each time how Lord March and his team will be able to surprise us again. But the quality of the demonstrations (Meyers Manx buggies, Jaguar XKs, D-Day parade, John Surtees Tribute) and the races mean that we come back for more each year, even if this one was greatly disrupted on Friday and Sunday morning by terrible weather. We will limit ourselves here to the tribute to John Surtees and the most emblematic races.
John Surtees Celebration
2024 marks the sixtieth anniversary of John Surtees’ F1 World Championship title. In 1964, he won the title with Ferrari with only four years of racing experience. But he already had 7 motorcycle World Championship titles. And it was here at Goodwood in March 1960 that Surtees began his motor racing career by finishing 2nd in a Formula Junior race behind Jim Clark. So it was John Surtees’ incredible career that was being celebrated at Goodwood this year.
Goodwood Trophy
The Goodwood Trophy is a 20-minute race for Grand Prix and voiturette cars of a type that raced between 1930 and 1951. In this race, the fight for victory and places of honour mainly concerned the ERAs, Alta and Frazer Nash while the Maseratis and Talbot-Lagos that interest us were relegated to one lap behind the leader.
Fordwater Trophy
The Fordwater Trophy is a race for production-based sports and GT cars of a type that raced between 1955 and 1960. The practice session took place in terrible conditions, with the track flooded in places, as you can see in the photos below. Congratulations to the drivers for their temerity.
St Mary’s Trophy
The St Mary’s Trophy counts two 25-minute races for saloon cars of a type that raced between 1960 and 1966.
Madwick Cup
The Madwick Cup is a 25-minute race for sports racing cars of 2.5 litres and under that raced between 1955 and 1960. This race features many English cars such as Cooper, Elva, Lola and Lotus. We will limit ourselves here to the three Maseratis entered.

Nice photos. Thanks. Slight correction. The BRM V16 from Hall and Hall is a recreation not a restoration.
