Story and Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt
For the 63rd year running, the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was a reunion of the crème de la crème of the classic automobile world.
This year’s edition celebrated among others the 50th anniversary of both Lamborghini and the Porsche 911, the Lincoln and Simplex brands, and the French coachbuilder Vanvooren.
Three days prior to the Concours held on Sunday, the participants have the opportunity to show their cars on the road during ‘the Tour d’Elegance.’ After an early start from Pebble Beach, the Tour traverses nearby mountains and valleys before doing a lap of the Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway for the first time this year. Then they head south on US1 to Big Sur before going back north to Carmel where they stop for lunch. The coastal road offers the opportunity to take good shots of the cars with the Pacific Ocean in the background. Although this year, some road work near Bixby Bridge caused traffic congestion not suitable for the old engines, and not very good for the photographers, as one might have vintage cars mixed with contemporary tourist cars, vans, trucks and even RVs !
Let’s see what was on show this year by make, and both on the golf course and the highway.

From left to right, 1934 Figoni Spider, 1932 Scuderia Ferrari Zagato Spider and 1932 Touring Le Mans Race car.

This 1932 Alfa Romeo Tipo B Biposto won the 1934 Monaco Grand Prix as well as the 1935 Mille Miglia.

During its life, this magnificent 1960 Alfa Romeo Superflow IV Pinin Farina coupé wore no less than five different bodies.

Shown at the 1961 London Motor Show, one of the few 250 GT Pinin Farina Coupe Speciales, s/n 2821 GT.

This 1964 250 LM s/n 5909 has a long racing career with famous drivers like Rindt, Surtees, Bandini, and Grossman.

Lamborghini celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The 400 GT Touring coupe played a big role in the success of the company.

Hughes, A correction the first photo you titled is incorrect. The 1934 Alfa 8C 2300 Zagato is maintained in the Scottsdale Automotive Museum it is not owned by Jonathan Fieber . The Museum also proudly won First in class in the Aston Martin Class with the 1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 Bertone and a second in class in the Pre-War restoration class with a 1935 Voisin C25 Clairiere. The Voisin also won the FIVA Award for best preserved Pre-War car. It was a great day at Pebble.
Thanks Great stuff. Almost as good as being there!
I truely love the way that Nick Mason has used his fortune wisely to buy such fantastic cars. I hope to see some of his beauties at my first visit to the Goodwood Revival next year. I wish I had “learned to play the drums”!
As always, Hugues’ photographs are stunning. One wonders if there will ever be such a large gathering of Alfa 8C2300’s in one place again?
