For the new enthusiast, this can be a challenge. Of this number, which books are the most interesting? Which are the most useful? Which address your individual car or model? What books are truly indispensable? Which are collectable? And what should an Alfa Romeo enthusiast learn about?
A large subject, to be sure. There are a great number of very good Alfa books to be had, exceeded only by those on Ferrari. For that we are grateful, but narrowing the list down to a manageable few is not easy. If a book does not
appear on the list, it does not mean that it is a bad book, only
not one of the best.
We've established two catagories; Tradition, Racing and General History, and
Model Specific books. The list of books number 17 in the first category and 21 in the second. They are arranged roughly in chronological order.
A third category could be Repair and Restoration. However, there is no need to list them, as there is a particular pecking order: first, factory shop and parts manuals, second, reprinted factory shop and parts manuals, third, Haynes, and lastly, Chilton. And of course these books would be reference material
for your specific model.
Within the two main categories, we're going to be selective and biased. We’ve been collecting Alfa books since 1965, and have a pretty good idea of what books are worthwhile, and Dave McClure of MotorBooks Italiano (www.MotorBooks Italiano.com). has added his opinions as well. So, here's a list of 38 of the best Alfa books in and out of print, with comments. Prices quoted are approximates, averaged from Interent search results, and will vary from dealer to dealer.
