Story and photos by Brandes Elitch

“Investissez dans votre plaisir!” (Invest in your pleasure)

About 25 years ago I first attended Retromobile with my friend Chris Dickel. We went three times together, along with simultaneous trips to Genoa Autostory and Essen Techno Classica. It was a fantastic experience. [Read more…] about Brandes Elitch at Retromobile

Graham Gauld: Le Mans, 1949

February 19, 2019 By pete

Story by Graham Gauld

Everyone remembers that the first Le Mans race held after WWII was in 1949 and was won by Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon driving a Ferrari barchetta. Usually that is where everyone’s recollections end; but that Le Mans race was fascinating not just as a spectacular event to take our minds off post-war austerity, but for some of the cars taking part. Sunshine for Enzo’s Birthday

February 19, 2019 By pete

A good time was had by all for Enzo’s birthday at the Petersen on February 17th, especially with a break in the rain.

Somebody must have switched Los Angeles’ weather for Seattle because the normally sunny city had a few weeks of intermittent rains. The Ferrari Club of America Southwest Region were worried they would get rained out in their annual birthday celebration for Enzo Ferrari at the famed Petersen museum. Etceterinis in the Mille Miglia

February 12, 2019 By pete

Story by Dino Brunori

Enrico Nardi, described by the Americans ‘the wiz who can squeeze more power from an engine than the official R&D of the factory’ is a name well known to all car enthusiasts. His career began in 1930 with Fiat as a test driver. In 1932 he went to Lancia where he became the pupil of Vincenzo Lancia, then in 1937 landed a job with Scuderia Ferrari with increasingly greater responsibilities, so much so that from 1940 he was Enzo Ferrari’s right-hand man. Alfa Romeo and Lancia Zagatos

February 12, 2019 By pete

Few of us were lucky enough to own a TZ1 or a SZ Coda Tronca. Al Morrison owned them both at the same time and would later own a Junior Zagato and a Fulvia Zagato. We present all four of his Spada-designed Zagatos in this feature.

Alfa Romeo GTZ 1

I first laid eyes on a new Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ 1 at the 1965 London International Motor Show when I was working in England as a very young architect. Right then I knew I wanted to own one someday. [Read more…] about Alfa Romeo and Lancia Zagatos

Ferrari 340 Mexico

February 12, 2019 By pete

Below is an anecdote from Ermanno Cozza’s new autobiography, “Maserati at Heart” about the Ferrari team at the 1952 Mexican Road Race, combined with some rare photos from Chris Cooper of one of those rare Ferrari Mexicos, 0224 AT, which is also documented by Alan Boe in a related article in last week’s VeloceToday. (Read 0224 AT).

In his remarkable memoir, Ermanno Cozza tells the story of Antonio Reggiani, a skilled engineer and carburetor specialist who worked at Ferrari before coming to Maserati.

Fahr(T)raum Museum in Austria

February 12, 2019 By pete

Text and photos by Aldo Zana

Salzburg, Austria, is a town immersed in music and culture, permeated with old Europe’s spirit. The Northeastern environs, the Salzkammergut, the beauty of gentle hills, perfectly cared-for meadows and yards, small villages dominated by church clock towers topped with onion-shaped domes and romantic lakes like the Mattsee are magically nostalgic.

True to the understatement of its founding family and the Austrian low-key approach to past glories, a new car museum opened on the Mattsee shore, focused on Austro Daimler and Steyr cars. [Read more…] about Fahr(T)raum Museum in Austria

Ferrari 0224 AT Vignale Mexico

February 5, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Alan Boe except as noted

There is no other Ferrari quite like it. The hood from the nose of the car back to the windshield tapes out at almost 78 inches; the midpoint of the 102.3 inch wheelbase is ahead of the base of the windshield; vertical spoilers, or air foils, are used on each door to route air along the sides of the car and into ducting ahead of the rear wheel openings for improved tire cooling, certainly the earliest obvious use of an aerodynamic device on a Ferrari; vestigial fins appear on each rear fender, and check out those wild front fender fins, or headlight blinders, all very distinctive design touches, and unique to the four 340 Mexico Ferraris.

The Books of Willem Oosthoek

February 5, 2019 By pete

Interview by Pete Vack
Portions of this interview were originally published here in 2004.

Most of us are avid readers, particularly of good, solid historical books which feature our favorite cars; the more detailed the better, with decent contemporary photos, chassis numbers, hardcore information that you can count on, preferably on nice stock and hardbound.

But few readers realize what goes into the making of such a book, and how difficult it is to find publishers. We decided to ask Maserati expert Willem Oosthoek how he did it and what kind of problems he encountered in writing his last three major works; in 2004, Birdcage to Supercage, in 2009, The Magnificent Front Engined Birdcages, and the three volume set, Sports Car Racing in the South,Texas to Florida, 1957-1962. The 2CV at its 70th

February 5, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

A press release from the organizers of this year’s Retromobile recently jogged my memory. Last year, we had Citroën shots from last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed which were not used in VeloceToday. It was the 70th anniversary of the Citroën 2CV, and to celebrate, one of the classes at the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours was dedicated to that Gallic charmer.
