Lancia Fulvia Zagato

When in Rome….

May 5, 2025 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

This piece should have had the title “The Anantara Concorso Rome” which we were to cover for VeloceToday on April 25, but following the death of the Pope the event was rightly cancelled out of respect. Still, flights had been booked and accommodations reserved, so we were still going, if feeling a bit sad. Little did we know that we’d have a very pleasant surprise just north of Rome.

Four Fab Zagatos

March 25, 2024 By pete

Few of us were lucky enough to own a TZ1 or a SZ Coda Tronca. Al Morrison owned them both at the same time and would later own a Junior Zagato and a Fulvia Zagato. We present all four of his Spada-designed Zagatos in this feature.

Alfa Romeo GTZ 1

I first laid eyes on a new Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ 1 at the 1965 London International Motor Show when I was working in England as a very young architect. Right then I knew I wanted to own one someday.

London Concours, 2023

In the Wild Card class, Harry Metcalfe’s 1972 Lancia Fulvia 1600 Zagato. It was this actual car that Harry saw outside his parent’s house in 1973 that first fueled his interest in cars.

Tuesday, June the 6th, time for my annual trip to the green oasis in the City of London that is the Honourable Artillery Company for the seventh running of the London Concours. As it is held in the heart of the financial district the event is held midweek as that part of London is nigh on deserted at the weekend. So what were this years classes? Eclectic as usual, from Land Rovers to Lamborghinis with a bit of bespoke and a few wild cards to boot. The sun shone (eventually) and everybody went home happy. The following is just a selection of the beauties on show.

Alfa Romeo GTZ 1

I first laid eyes on a new Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ 1 at the 1965 London International Motor Show when I was working in England as a very young architect. Right then I knew I wanted to own one someday.

Morrison sent this photo he took of the TZ as seen at the 1965 London Motor show. He was immediately smitten with the car and knew he’d own one someday, somehow.

Five years later in 1970, after seeing an ad in Competition Press, I decided this was my chance. A few phone calls to the seller and a couple of Polaroid pictures later, a friend and I flew from Atlanta, Georgia to El Paso, Texas armed with a box of tools and a full-purchase-price check in hand. Who but a young Alfa nut would forsake normal automotive due diligence before making such a risky purchase?

Atlanta-based Morrison went to Texas to pick up this Alfa TZ1 in 1970. It was in remarkably good condition and after a new battery, Morrison hopped in and co-drove it back to Georgia. The chassis number is 750038.
