Ferrari 166 M S/N 0010 M

Story and Photos by Alan Boe

From the VeloceToday Archives, Jan 9, 2018

All old Ferraris have a story to tell but most never get the words out. That, however, is not the case with the magnificent little 166 MM Touring-bodied barchetta, s/n 0010 M, which had its story told twice in Cavallino and in the September 1996 edition of Classic and Sports Cars. It’s worth another look because this one of the most important Ferraris of them all. Ferrari historian and Pebble Beach Judge Alan Boe relates the story.

You may be surprised to find out what it’s like driving an early Ferrari. But before we get into the cockpit, let’s review some pertinent statistics that shed light on the performance and handling characteristics.

Ferrari 340 Mexico

February 12, 2019 By pete

Below is an anecdote from Ermanno Cozza’s new autobiography, “Maserati at Heart” about the Ferrari team at the 1952 Mexican Road Race, combined with some rare photos from Chris Cooper of one of those rare Ferrari Mexicos, 0224 AT, which is also documented by Alan Boe in a related article in last week’s VeloceToday. (Read 0224 AT).

In his remarkable memoir, Ermanno Cozza tells the story of Antonio Reggiani, a skilled engineer and carburetor specialist who worked at Ferrari before coming to Maserati.

Ferrari 0224 AT Vignale Mexico

February 5, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Alan Boe except as noted

There is no other Ferrari quite like it. The hood from the nose of the car back to the windshield tapes out at almost 78 inches; the midpoint of the 102.3 inch wheelbase is ahead of the base of the windshield; vertical spoilers, or air foils, are used on each door to route air along the sides of the car and into ducting ahead of the rear wheel openings for improved tire cooling, certainly the earliest obvious use of an aerodynamic device on a Ferrari; vestigial fins appear on each rear fender, and check out those wild front fender fins, or headlight blinders, all very distinctive design touches, and unique to the four 340 Mexico Ferraris.

Ferrari S/N 041S by Stabilimenti Farina

April 3, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Alan Boe

When recounting the story of one of Ferrari’s earliest models, the 166 series of coupes, cabriolets and barchettas, names such as Carrozzeria Touring and Vignale play an important part. Theirs was the job of providing coachwork for most of the early two-liter Ferraris.

But the names of other carrozzeria also come up when tracing the history of those little V12s. In addition to Touring and Vignale, Allemano, Ghia, Bertone and Stabilimenti Farina all had a hand, to a greater or lesser degree, in clothing Ferrari’s 166 Sport and Inter chassis. Allemano did a coupe and a cabriolet, Bertone a lone 166 cabriolet, Ghia bodied a berlinetta, Zagato did a fastback coupe and Stabilimenti Farina did five coupes and three cabriolets. (A ninth car, a 212 Inter coupe was the last Stabilimenti Farina bodied Ferrari.)

The Kimberly Years

A month after its win at Spa, Luigi Chinetti, Sr. and Lord Selsdon of England placed their barchetta eighth in the Grand Prix of the Auto Club of Paris at Montlhéry, which turned out to be its last race on continental soil. But by no means was s/n 0010 M done racing. In early 1950, the car was sold through Chinetti to Jim Kimberly of Chicago, Illinois, heir to the Kimberly Clark industrial empire.
