Oldtimers at the Nurburgring, 2015

Alessandro Gerelli has been wandering off to the Oldtimer’s event at the Nurburgring since 1997, often in the rain, but always coming back with plenty of photos of vintage racing, the German way. Gerelli has covered the Nurburgring Oldtimers for VeloceToday in 2002, 2004 and then every year since 2006! This year is no exception and as usual, it is a remarkable contrast to Monterey Car week. Not better or worse, but certainly different. Gerelli also noted that “At the 43rd edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix, as many others events of this type, the title ‘oldtimer’ is becoming more and more ‘youngtimer’. But thankfully, at the Ring among the many recent cars, it is still easy to find also few jewels of the now-distant past.” Onward, Olditmers.

He covers the Ferraris and Maseratis in a separate article.

Story and photos by Alessandro Gerelli

During the weekend of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, an important auction was held by RM Sotheby’s in the nearby Villa Erba. Only 40 lots were in the catalog with a couple of Riva boats and 17 Ferraris.

Top Ferrari models were a 1961 California SWB (with an estimate of more than 10 M euros) and a 1960 Berlinetta 250 SWB, unfortunately both unsold. Top price was reached for the Ferrari 212 Export by Touring of 1952 at 6.7 M euros.

All the prices are in euros and include the buyer’s premium.

Alessandro Gerelli has been covering the Mille Miglia for us since 2004, not missing a year since. Each May, he takes us down to Brescia were he has a chance to wander about, finding fascinating cars even he has not seen before.

This year was no exception…the Zanussi, seen above, is a new one on us and just as attractive as a Fiat can possibly be. And every year there are new restorations, new owners and new experiences.

Missing in the captions are the name of the entrants, however, these can be seen on a PDF offered by the Mille Miglia website. Click here to obtain the PDF.

Or, just enjoy the Italian car show at Brescia, arranged in alphabetical order below.

Milan AutoClassica 2015

A brief description from the Milan Autoclassica website: “Milano AutoClassica is dedicated to enthusiasts, specialists in the field and whoever wants to draw closer to the fascinating world of Classic Cars. One major goal is to spread the love of our hobby among the younger and more dynamic generations. Following on from the successful outcome of the first two editions and the huge success of the third, Milano Autoclassica returned in 2015, even bigger and better than before. Covering a more extensive exhibition area, with ample areas to test-drive the cars in the open and special events planned for enthusiasts, the curious, and newcomers, making it possible to fully experience classical and sporting cars, together with the world that revolves around them: magnificent vehicles, accessories, special events and Guest Cars; restorers, registers, models, and an area dedicated to private sales.”

As Gerelli notes, the atmosphere is much different than that of France’s Retromobile, where the old car dealers are of a higher class. But even for a long time trouper like Gerelli, there is always something he has never seen before…as his photos below indicate.

Of course most of the cars are French, but looking around one may find everything because collectors and enthusiasts come to visit the exhibition with their cars.

Maserati 250F sculpture got our attention.

Since we are celebrating our tenth anniversary this year, we thought it might be nice to list all the articles about the Nurburgring Oldtimer event filed by Alessandro Gerelli in the past decade. It’s an interesting walk through the famous paddock and one can get a sense of how much or how little vintage racing, European style, has changed over the years. Above and below, Gerelli’s photos from this year’s Oldtimer Grand Prix. [Read more…] about Oldtimer Grand Prix, 2012

Ferrari’s Birthplace Now a Museum

March 21, 2012 By Gerelli

Alessandro Gerelli captures the old and the new.

Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

We’re sure everyone has seen the news about the opening of the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari. We are also sure that no one covers it better than VeloceToday. No PR here, but a good many insights from the Man himself.

 ferrari-museum

The workshop next to the new Museum building: ‘My brother and I shared a room over the workshop and were awakened in the morning by the ringing of the hammers. My father Alfredo…made gangways and sheds for the State Railways.’—Enzo Ferrari

The photo is at the entrance of the old buiding and reads 'I am the one who dreamt of being Ferrari.' The yellow museum poster reads 'If you can dream it, you can do it.'

The Ferrari house has been completely restructured and adapted as an art gallery. Enzo Ferrari’s activities during his life are displayed via multimedia with video, documents and car displays. A very futuristic building has been built side by side to the old house: the new structure, when seen from above, looks like the bonnet of a car in yellow, the color of Modena. The new building was designed by Jan Kaplichy, who unfortunately died in 2009 without seeing the final result of his genius. It was completed by Andrea Morgante of the Shiro Studio. At the beginning of 1960s, I was a boy attending high school who didn’t know anything about cars; my family didn’t even own one.

But automobiles suddenly got my attention and quickly expanded to include the car-racing world, where I quickly discovered the existence of a brand called Ferrari, competing in many different classes.
