Vanhoolandt’s Goodwood Part 1

October 6, 2025 By pete

A heavy downpour had soaked the Goodwood track, forming an impressive puddle at the exit of the chicane. It took more than that to impress the driver of this 1938 Maserati 8CTF.

It’s a little-known fact that Jim Clark tested an Alfa Romeo. Purchased by an Alfa Romeo UK employee for racing, Jim Clark tested this Giulietta Sprint Veloce at Charterhall to compare it to the Lotus Elite.

Goodwood Revival 2024, Vanhoolandt Part 1

September 23, 2024 By pete

At the start of Saturday’s race reserved for professional drivers, Frank Stippler took the lead straight away in his 1965 Sprint GTA.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Having attended the Goodwood Revival many times over the years, one wonders each time how Lord March and his team will be able to surprise us again. But the quality of the demonstrations (Meyers Manx buggies, Jaguar XKs, D-Day parade, John Surtees Tribute) and the races mean that we come back for more each year, even if this one was greatly disrupted on Friday and Sunday morning by terrible weather. We will limit ourselves here to the tribute to John Surtees and the most emblematic races.

Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2018

July 31, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I never had a chance to visit the Steering Wheel Club in London, or the Tip Top Bar in Monte Carlo, but I just wonder if maybe a little bit of the after-hours atmosphere found in those two old racing driver haunts is also present in the assembly area of the Festival of Speed, without the booze and grumpy waiter of course.

Goodwood Festival of Speed with Hugues Vanhoolandt

July 24, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Every year, the Festival of Speed celebrates anniversaries in the world of motorsport but last weekend (July 14-15), it was the Festival of Speed itself that celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Porsche was also put in the limelight, 70 years after its humble beginnings in 1948. The central sculpture in front of Goodwood House was dedicated to the Stuttgart manufacturer.

There are thousands of scenes to photograph at the Revival and we apologize for publishing so many seemingly endless images in this article. However, the Goodwood Revival comes only once a year and while in some respects is the same (the venue, the races, many of the cars) every year there will be something decidedly different which will make me go ‘Wow!’

Jonathan Sharp’s Goodwood: The Drivers

July 18, 2017 By pete

Cars in the life of Bernie Ecclestone. To celebrate the five ages of Bernie, 70 tons of steel, 600 bolts, 400 liters of undercoat/ primer and 100 liters of top coat. Gerry Judah’s central feature this year contained a Connaught to mark Bernie’s days as a driver, Jochan Rindt’s Lotus 72 as a manager, a Brabham BT49 as a team owner, a Ferrari F2001 for his time as a deal maker, and Nico Rosberg’s 2016 Mercedes W07 to mark the legend that is Bernie.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, I spend a lot of time in the assembly area as it has such a nice atmosphere. The drivers tend to greet each other as old friends. You will usually catch one or two of them taking photos of the cars, or selfies for themselves. You do need eyes in the back of your head though, as whilst you are using your pointy elbows to get a shot of a driver at one end of the paddock another star will have arrived at the other end, but it’s all good exercise for me. Jonathan Sharp’s Goodwood: The Cars

July 18, 2017 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I have been going to the Festival of Speed for at least the past 15 years if not more, and the event still manages to surprise me with the cars they are able to entice out of the woodwork. Each year there will be cars and items I have seen before, many of them will be old favorites, some that maybe you have not have seen for a few years. But lurking in a pit garage or arriving in the assembly area will always be something you have not seen before.

The organizers also try harder. Take, for example, the selection of DFV powered cars chosen to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Double Four Valve. Not just a selection of Lotus, Williams, McLaren etc., but at least 5 Lotus 49s as well as the Eifelland Coswoth E21 and the unique 1972 Connew PC1, which was built by Peter Connew in his single car garage next to his house. The Maranello’s Masterpiece Class of Ferrari 250s in the Cartier Style et Luxe concours contained a GTO and a SWB, but also the Bertone-bodied 250 known as the Shark nose. In the Aston Martin class was the Bertone Jet and the Ogle Sotherby’s special. For the cheeky Cinquecento clas,s the Zagato Zanzara, a Ghia Jolly and a Necker Weinsberg Coupe. They just don’t quit. Below are these and many more. [Read more…] about Jonathan Sharp’s Goodwood: The Cars

Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed develops several themes on which the entry list is based.

This year, one of the themes was ‘Peaks of Performance – Motorsport’s Game-Changers’ that celebrated the cars that were too dominant, too powerful or too dangerous so that the rules had to be changed. [Read more…] about Vanhoolandt at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2015

Almost hundred years earlier, it was what a Grand Prix car looked like ! This Fiat S74 Grand Prix car, powered by a 14.2-litre 4-cylinder, almost won the 1911 US Grand Prix but was thwarted by an oil leak.

Every year, the Festival of Speed attracts huge crowds of spectators who come to Goodwood for diverse reasons. Some want to see the latest supercar machinery in action, some come to see the stars of the ‘drift’, some wait for hours hoping to get the autograph of Raikkonen, Rosberg or Valentino Rossi, and some want to step back in time and touch the cars they dreamed about in their youth and to show these to their children.
