With all the celebrations surrounding the 50th Birthday of BMW’s M division at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 23-26) you could have easily missed an equally important anniversary that was celebrated at the event, namely the 75th Anniversary of Ferrari.

This is the Festival of Speed

Story and Photos by Jonathan Sharp

Definition of stress: trying to assemble and organize this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Cars that could not be sent, cars that were sent but the mechanics to run them could not travel. Many drivers arrived, some drivers could not for obvious reasons. Now put the cars, mechanics, owners and drivers in order. The fact that the Goodwood team were able to put on the event, and that the event was up to its usual high standard, deserves the fullest praise.

Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2018

I never had a chance to visit the Steering Wheel Club in London, or the Tip Top Bar in Monte Carlo, but I just wonder if maybe a little bit of the after-hours atmosphere found in those two old racing driver haunts is also present in the assembly area of the Festival of Speed, without the booze and grumpy waiter of course.

Every year, the Festival of Speed attracts huge crowds of spectators who come to Goodwood for diverse reasons. Some want to see the latest supercar machinery in action, some come to see the stars of the ‘drift’, some wait for hours hoping to get the autograph of Raikkonen, Rosberg or Valentino Rossi, and some want to step back in time and touch the cars they dreamed about in their youth and to show these to their children. The Four Days of the Goodwood Festival of Speed June 11-14 2013

The Goodwood Festival of Speed has become a four day affair. In addition, this year was the 20th Anniversary of the Festival of Speed and all of the stops were pulled to celebrate.

Thursday is the Moving Motor Show day, a new style of motor show where if you are lucky and your chosen manufacturer thinks you are a genuine customer, one is allowed to drive a test course around the Goodwood Estate including the hill climb course. Hugues Vanhoolandt at Goodwood Festival

Maserati 8CM enjoying life.

By Hugues Vanhoolandt

This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed’s main theme was ‘Young Guns – Born to Win’, celebrating drivers, riders, designers and engineers of motor sport. Alain Prost was in particular honored by a display of the F1 cars he drove.

Other highlights were the celebration of Lotus 60th anniversary and a display of cars from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s collection (see our report next week).

But there was a lot happening for VeloceToday fans, so let’s see what was out there on the French and Italian sides.

Alpine-

For the 50th birthday of the famous Alpine, the Renault Collection brought to Goodwood this 1800 S version, driven by Jean Ragnotti, ex-works Renault Rally (and sportscar) driver.

Although busy with its F1 and Le Mans programs, Renault entered this little R5 in the 1978 Monte Carlo Rally where it took 2nd and 3rd overall with Ragnotti and Frequelin.
