London Concours, 2024 Part 1

June 24, 2024 By pete

Our favorite Zagato

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I arrived home from Turin, unpacked, and downloaded the photos from Villa Erba, then off again, this time to the green oasis in the City of London that is ‘The Honourable Artillery Company’ for the eighth running of the London Concours, a three day event held mid-week. Why midweek? The city of London, or the square mile as it is often called, is like a ghost town on the weekends and one needs an audience for a concours.

Story by Roberto Motta

Alfa Romeo 33/2 Coupé special by Pininfarina

Looking at the 33/2 Coupé Special, take the time to savor the moment, and let your eyes explore the details of a very special car that has the flavor of an artistic creation, enhanced by the yellow color of the sensual lines of the body.

In the late sixties, Ferrari commissioned Pininfarina to do a study of new car with advanced aerodynamics. To design the car, Pininfarina chose Ing. Leonardo Fioravanti, because he was young, had ideas, and even more, had a mechanical engineering education at the Politecnico di Milano where his studies were focused on aerodynamics and car body design.

A New Look at an Old Horse

April 7, 2020 By pete

By Peter Darnall

The Cavallino Rampante, or “prancing pony,” is the iconic logo of Ferrari automobiles. Dedicated fans of the marque—ferraristi—are easy to spot at any Grand Prix event; look for a boisterous crowd waving huge banners. That jaunty horse figure on the gold shield has been associated with Ferrari race cars for a long time, but it didn’t start out that way. The Cavallino Rampante first appeared on the hood of an Alfa Romeo race car in 1932. The letters “SF” on the lower part of the insignia stood for “Scuderia Ferrari.”

But why had Ferrari waited nine years to place the Cavallino Rampante figure on a Scuderia Alfa Romeo?

Readers who are familiar with the history of the T33 Alfas (and VeloceToday seems to harbor most of them!) are even more fascinated with the series of T33 Stradales that were destined to have fantastic, special bodies built on the chassis. They are some of Alfa Romeo’s most treasured and beautiful showcars. Roberto Motta recent revealed the story of how chassis s/n 75033112 was designed by Fioravanti based on a previous effort called the Ferrari 250 P5. But, we all asked, wasn’t the Alfa s/n 75033115?

Dreyfus at Scuderia Ferrari

Above: July 21st, 1935. Dreyfus wins the Grand Prix of Dieppe with the Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo. His wife Chou-Chou presents the flowers; chief mechanic Attilio Marinoni is leaning over the car.

This photo, sent to us by Dale LaFollette of Vintage Motorphoto, was taken on July 21st, 1935 by an unknown photographer doing work for the French Bureau of the New York Times. Dale has also included the notes on the back which we also reproduce here. We’ll credit this one to the New York Times. The original print of this photo is available from Vintage Motorphoto.com; Dale is constantly updating his stock so be sure to check it out.

Most of our readers will be somewhat familiar with the interesting life of René Dreyfus, whose career included winning the Monte Carlo Grand Prix in a Bugatti, the first of many race victories. Dreyfus drove for Maserati, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Talbot Lago, Delage, Renault and others before and after WWII.

A Car Life, by Larry Crane

April 8, 2009 By pete

Enzo Ferrari.

An audience with the pope of motorsport

The technical briefing was winding down. A dozen American journalists were asking questions, the depth of which suggest the knowledge/experience of the source. We had been in a half-lit room watching and listening and interrogating the bright young engineering talent of Ferrari’s future for over an hour. The room was softly lit by sunlight making its way through the translucent drapes across the wall in front of us. Dr. Emelio Anchisi, then the Director of Ferrari North America, was looking anxious and mentioned the time to the presenters. Suddenly the door to our right opened and was held open by Piero Lardi Ferrari and in walked his dad. [Read more…] about A Car Life, by Larry Crane
