Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance 2018

Let me start by saying right out that the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was so utterly surprising and overwhelming that I suspect I cannot convey in mere words the totality of the experience. I doubt if so many fabulous automobiles have ever been assembled in one spot, anywhere, at one time, and with logical and consistent themes as well.

Now I realize that these are strong words, so let me provide a bit of perspective. I started attending the events at Monterey back in 1979, and I have never missed a year since, although the events have changed from year to year. I attended the Pebble Beach show for about 25 years, and I have some great memories, such as helping John Bond push his Railton to the field when it would not start. But eventually, I got tired of the traffic and the crowds and the impossibility of finding parking, and finally I just decided to go home Saturday night after the AFAS reception. Ferraris and the Pebble Beach Races with Michael T. Lynch

The second row is comprised of Les Wexner’s ex-Spear 340 Mexico (left) and the ex-Randy MacDougall 166 Vignale Spyder now owned by Phil Bachman. The next row has Wexner’s ex-John Edgar 857 S next to John McCaw’s #116, the ex-Craycroft 166 Barchetta. Bringing up the rear is the ex-von Neumann 500 Mondial of Thomas Peck (left) and Wexner’s ex-Bill Spear 340 America Vignale Spyder.  Prizes won by cars in this class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance include: Ferrari 500 Mondial, Thomas Peck, First in the Ferrari in the Pebble Beach Road Races Class. Ferrari 340 Mexico, Les Wexner, Second in the Ferrari in the Pebble Beach Road Races Class, the Phil Hill Cup. Les Wexner, Ferrari 857S. Third in the Ferrari in the Pebble Beach Road Races Class.

As Monterey’s automotive Holy Week has expanded over the years, the organizers of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance have also enhanced their offerings to include the popular Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, Pebble Beach Retro Auto, the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forums and the two evenings of auctions by David Gooding among others. This year, there was a special treat in that to commemorate Ferrari’s participation in the original races in Pebble Beach, a class for Ferraris that had raced on the public road circuit from 1950-1956 was included.
