The 2015 Annual Best of Italy and France Show

Story and photos by Joe Duray

The 53rd Annual Best of Italy and France Show was held on November 2. It is probably the oldest car show in Southern California, and occurs annually on the first Sunday of November in a beautiful park in the San Fernando Valley.

It is special in that any car or vintage is allowed to show if it was built in either Italy or France. It is a car show for car owners. There is no car judging, and the cost of registration is minimal. This brings out a large array of cars. This year, approximately 350 cars were on the green. There is no cost for spectator admission.

Automedon 2018

This is the sixth consecutive year Alessandro Gerelli has covered this event for VeloceToday, and each year he brings us cars rarely seen anywhere else in the world. For this reason, it is one of the editor’s favorite car shows; you will never be bored here or see the same cars over and over again. Indeed, it is often a guessing game for us. For example, this year Alessandro photographed three special bodied Traction Avant 11s; we ask our readers to help identify each one. [Read more…] about Automedon 2018

The annual Paris Motor Show aka Mondial De L’Auto in Paris was held from October 4 to the 14 at 1 Place de la Porte de Versailles, 75015 Paris, France. It is a huge event, as can be seen from the map below, with multiple features ranging from motorcycles to parts to displays of both new and classic cars. Some major manufacturers were missing, and there was much discussion of the new WLTP standards, electric cars and the death of the diesel. However, we shall remain focused on the classics. Chantilly Arts & Elegance Concours

September 15, 2015 By pete

A special class was dedicated to the racing Bugattis and included this Type 50 that was entered at Le Mans in 1931, seen here during the rally on Saturday. This is the first Bugatti on which Jean Bugatti’s technical influence was very important.

The first edition of the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Concours held in 2014 was a great success and it promised not to be an easy task for Peter Auto, who organizes also the Tour Auto and Le Mans Classic, to do better. [Read more…] about Chantilly Arts & Elegance Concours

Epoqu’Auto in Lyon, 2013

January 7, 2014 By pete

Story and Photos by Thomas Bromehead

Next month everyone will be headed to Paris for Retromobile, France’s largest classic car show. But last November 8-10, 50,000 people attended France’s second largest event, Epoqu’ Auto. No newcomer, the event celebrated its 35th anniversary and now boasts more exhibitors than even the fabled Retro. [Read more…] about Epoqu’Auto in Lyon, 2013

Best of France and Italy, 2013

Woodley Park is a vast green expanse of grass near a large earthen dam that is part of the water control system that brought water to parched Los Angeles in the 1920s. There are frequent car shows there but for lovers of Italian and French cars this is one of the best.
Why? First because it’s free and second because it brings out lots of cars that aren’t spiffy enough to be in a concours but still damned interesting. Cars on their way to glory, one might say.

Lancia Appia Sedan, Series I or II owned by Tina Byrd.

In the French category, there were Simcas, Citroens, Renaults (including two Caravelle convertibles which are surprisingly elegant cars considering they sold new for under $3000) Facel Vegas from the magnificent Facel II to the Facellias, a Matra Djet, a half dozen Renault Turbo I and Turbo II pocket rockets.

But most of the French cars seemed postwar, in contrast to this event in the past, when there were half a dozen prewar cars. (Could it be the prewar cars are now too nicely restored to show?) Oddly, right in the middle of the French offerings was a Packard which they said was bodied by Kellner, but except for a sharp crease in the rear fenders and a very rakish second windscreen, we couldn’t see much Euro influence.

Delightful, imaginative, and probably stock color scheme for this 2CV.

Nosey Citroens, Number One.

Story and Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

Automedon is an event that takes place in Paris at Bourget exhibition center every year in October. It is a collector car and motorbike exhibition with many owner’s clubs, spare parts dealers, and booksellers. Of course most of the cars are French, but looking around one may find everything because collectors and enthusiasts come to visit the exhibition with their cars.

Best of France and Italy 2011

November 23, 2011 By pete

One of our favorite shows is the “Best of France and Italy”, held every year on the grounds of Woodley Park in the L.A. area. It is low key, a true enthusiasts gathering, and brings out a great variety of unusual French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian and Czechoslovakian cars. Don Hodgdon was there for us.[Ed.]

Story and photos by Don Hodgdon

Rain was falling when I woke up Sunday morning, but it passed through quickly and I left Santa Barbara under sunny skies. I had thought twice about heading down to Woodley Park, having my doubts that anyone would show up. While the numbers were down from past years, considering the rain there was a good group of cars. Alfas and Fiats, along with a healthy group of Citroens made up the bulk of the show, and I think there were almost as many Tatras (3) as there were Ferraris.
