Heveningham Concours d'Elegance

Aircraft at Heveningham

July 16, 2024 By pete

Not an entrant this year, and yes I know we have shown her to you before, 1943 Vickers Supermarine Spitfire MK9 MH434 waits patiently for her afternoon display slot.

Just a short walk up the hill from Heveningham Hall, the Country fair and the Automotive Concours and you find a different world. A freshly mown field, a few trees in full green, a pleasant view of Suffolk Countryside, and 12 vintage aeroplanes parked for inspection and delight. In addition to a car Concours the Heveningham event also includes the Hanna Trophy, an Aviation concours in memory of the much missed Hanna pairing, father and son Raynham and Mark Hanna.

Heveningham Hall Concours 2024

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

It was all very last minute. It is a bit of a hike up to Suffolk (158 miles) from my home in Brighton, my Alfa Giulietta had been making some funny and expensive noises, I have been rather busy recently and the lawn at home was looking more like a jungle, but I woke up on Friday morning with a change of heart. Straight onto the internet, found a hotel nearby for the Friday night and off we went. The M25 on a Friday afternoon is not such a good idea but after four and a half hours (including an hour just to get through the Dartford Tunnel) I arrived at my hotel in Ipswich, time for an early night as I planned to get to Heveningham Hall nice and early.

Heveningham Concours 2023

1960 Bristol 406 Sports Saloon by Zagato. This example is chassis 5299, one of six constructed, that was sold by Tony Crook to Richard Robinson, a well-known Bristol owners club member, who retained the car for three decades. Compared to a standard 406, the Zagato Sports Saloon is shorter, lower, and lighter to the tune of 260kg giving the car a top speed in the order of 120 mph. Between 2002 and 2005, 5299 was restored as to how it appeared at the 1960 Earls Court Motor Show.

I am writing this intro to the Heveningham show on what has for me become a free Saturday (July 15) as day three of the Festival of Speed at Goodwood has just been cancelled, meaning I can stay home. The sun is shining but it is very windy, not kind to tents and other temporary structures built on the Goodwood Estate. What a change to last Saturday (July 8th) when I was in Suffolk at Heveningham Hall for the Country Fair and Concours where the sun shone down but the heat and humidity were to put mildly…yuk!. So here is our report from that somewhat better weekend.

Heveningham Concours d’Elegance, Suffolk, U.K.

Without doubt my favorite car of the event (and my wife’s favorite as well) was this this 1932 Alfa Romeo 1750 Supercharged Grand Sport with bodywork by Figoni of Paris, hence the Alfa Romeo Paris badge. The car was known in Paris prior to WWII before moving to the French Riviera during the conflict. It resided in Florida before being returned to the UK about 15 years ago. This was the first time the car had been publicly displayed in the UK.
