Monterey Round One

August 29, 2017 By pete

Story by Brandes Elitch
Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

The 32nd annual Concorso Italiano was held at the Blackhorse/Bayonet golf course at Fort Ord, California, on August 19, 2017. Originally conceived by Francis Mandarano of the Maserati Information Exchange, this event has been managed since 2009 by Tom McDowell.

Concorso Italiano is probably the largest gathering of Italian special interest and collector cars anywhere in the world. Special features this year were “Seventy Years of Ferrari,” the 50th anniversary of the Maserati Ghibli, and the first part of a three-year celebration of Alfa Romeo, this year featuring the GTV, Giulia, and 4C. I particularly appreciated the interview on the stage with event originator Mandarano, who gave a history of the event and a tribute to Tom Tjaarda, who passed away recently, but was in attendance at previous shows. There was also an interview with Pete Brock, and one of the highlights of the day for me was getting to talk to Pete in person. [Read more…] about Monterey Round One

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione, # 16425, entered in 1973 by Ecurie Francorchamps at the 1000 km of Spa and 24 hours of Le Mans.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed develops several themes on which the entry list is based.

This year, one of the themes was ‘Peaks of Performance – Motorsport’s Game-Changers’ that celebrated the cars that were too dominant, too powerful or too dangerous so that the rules had to be changed. [Read more…] about Vanhoolandt at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Hugues Vanhoolandt’s Mille Miglia 2017

May 30, 2017 By pete

The Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Pinin Farina s/n 0418 MD finished 15th overall in 1954. Today it is a Mille Miglia regular with the Bean family from Atlanta.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

A few days ago, the Mille Miglia celebrated 90 years since its first edition in 1927.
It is also 60 years since the last ‘real’ thing happened.

For more than 30 years, a regularity rally has resurrected the glorious days of the Mille Miglia.
From Brescia to Roma and back, the long caravan of more than 400 classic cars goes through the old cities of Italy and the landscapes of Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Marche and Tuscany to name a few. Here is but a small overview of this anniversary edition.

Techno Classica Show Essen, Germany, 2017

April 18, 2017 By pete

A year later, Gangloff also penned the body of this Type 57 C. The design has evolved to a more exuberant style, more usually seen on Saoutchik or Figoni creations.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

“Techno Classica Essen, the entire classic world under one roof”. This was the motto of the German show now in its 29th edition and held from April 5-9.

The numbers speaks for themselves as the show attracts more than 1,250 exhibitors and 220 clubs and communities of interest, showing more than 2,500 collector cars. Needless to say that two days are a minimum to see the entire exhibition, still at a fast pace. We will therefore concentrate on some specials from France and Italy. Rétromobile, Paris February 7-11

Once again, the latest edition of Rétromobile has raised the bar to the highest standards and it won’t be easy for its British, German or Italian counterparts to reach the same level.

Next to the many dealers showing their best offers, there are plenty of car clubs and associations exhibiting small treasuries, as well as many displays celebrating some anniversaries or putting the light on some unknown stories.

This year, these exhibitions were, among others, the “70 years of Ferrari”, “Bugatti meets Bentley”, the “Four-wheel drive and six-wheel F1 cars” , “30 years of Group B rally cars”, the “1927 Delage Grand Prix cars”, the “Renault Turbo years”, and many others.

On the French Side…

dggf

Bernard Pichon and André Parat created their own company, Pichon-Parat, in 1952. With Chapron, they were among the last French coachbuilders present at the Paris Motor Show at the end of the 50s. One of their creations is the Panhard Dolomite which was entered in many competitions, like this one in the 1956 Tour de France. Raymond Loewy also designed some cars that were built by Pichon-Parat like a BMW 507 and a Jaguar E-Type.

fgdfgf

One of the exhibitions was about the cars created by Victor Bouffort, a forward-thinking man. Here is the ‘Minima’, a small car conceived in 1968, for city dwellers. There were plans to mass-produce these small cars and to make them freely available in dedicated areas where they would be parked opposite pavements. Of course, Bouffort was a bit ahead of its time, but fifty years later, the idea of a freely available car comes back to light as an urban transport solution.

fgsg

This Chausson microcar prototype was rediscovered in an auction at Silverstone in 2012. In the early years of the 20th century, Chausson was a leading radiator manufacturer for the car and aircraft industries. In the 30s, Chausson took over Chenard & Walcker. During WWII, some Chausson engineers began to develop this microcar prototype. But the economic situation in France after WWII did not permit to make it into production and it remained the sole example built.

vzxcv

This small car is the Moynet LM75, built by André Moynet, an ex-fighter pilot during WWII who became Colonel in the French Air Force. After two unsuccessful attempts at Le Mans, Moynet entered the LM75 in the 1975 edition with an all-female team, Dacremont, Hoepfner and Mouton. Against all expectations and despite the small Chrysler Simca engine developing 190 HP, they went on to win the under two-liter class.

dffsad

In 1921, Crossley Motors, based in Manchester, England reached an agreement with Bugatti to produce under license the Bugatti ‘Brescia’. About 25 cars were built and this example, a Type 23, is believed to be the only complete example still in existence.

gdfg

Joseph Figoni exercised his talent for the most prestigious French car manufacturers of the time. One of them was of course Delage. On the booth of ‘Les Amis de Delage’, the French Delage enthusiasts club, was displayed this 1930 D8S cabriolet built for Maharajah of Holkar.

gdsgf

This 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS s/n 90110 illustrates the “Teardrop” body style that made Figoni so famous, although the original body of this car has been lost and recreated by a well-known artisan in 2003. This car will go on sale at the RM Sotheby’s auction on Lake Como this May.

sdfsf

Begun in 1939, completed in 1947, the Delahaye 135 M roadster by Figoni s/n 47420 was displayed in some of the Concours of Elegance that were popular in France in the postwar years. After being dismantled, the chassis has been converted into a farm trailer. Now it has been rebuilt to its former glory by another French specialized workshop.

On the Italian side…

fdafd

Although sharing some similarities with the 250 F, the 420/M/58 ‘Eldorado’ was a racing car built specifically for the 1958 500 Miles of Monza, opposing the best Indy roadsters of the time and a selection of European single seaters. Contrary to what one might think, it was not Fangio who drove this car but Stirling Moss, classified 7th after three heats. It was displayed by the Maserati Club de France.

fgdg

Although no information was available, it seems that this interesting 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 was designed by German coachbuilder Erdmann & Rossi but built by the French workshop of Brandone.

100 years of BMW was the unmistakable theme of Monterey Car Week in 2016. And of course, it was also the case for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion held at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 18-21. But BMW was not the only highlight as the Can-Am series were also celebrated as well as historic F1 cars and Trans-Am cars.

All in all, more than 550 cars were to be seen on track in one of the 15 races. For those who were too busy with the various other events during the main weekend, they could enjoy an already strong field of cars during the Pre-Reunion meeting held one week before the Reunion itself. We attended both days, and so the following images are from both events. [Read more…] about Hugues Vanhoolandt at The Rolex Reunion

29th Reims Vintage Car Show

Do you recognize a Citroën Traction Avant here ? This example is equipped with a radiator grill built by Emile Tonneline, a small coachbuilder from Courbevoie. After WWII, it was fashionable to give an American look to your car and Tonneline sold many of these radiator grills.

This car is equipped with a radiator grill built by Emile Tonneline, a small coachbuilder from Courbevoie. After WWII, it was fashionable to give an American look to your car and Tonneline sold many of these radiator grills. But what kind of car has been given this treatment?

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

If the French city of Reims is known worldwide for hosting many of the largest champagne-producing houses, the City of Kings is also famous among the motorsport enthusiasts for being the setting for fourteen French Grand Prix.

The 12 hours of Reims was also an important event of the endurance calendar and being held usually one month after the Le Mans 24 hours, it was often considered as an antidote to the Le Mans classic.

Although the old pits buildings have been recently restored, this is a bygone era as the fast Reims circuit ceased its activities in 1969.

The old pits building and the grandstands along the finish straight which is a national road between the villages of Thillois and Gueux.

Nevertheless, Reims is still attracting automotive enthusiasts from France and the neighboring countries. Every March the “Salon Champenois du Véhicule de Collection” is held. It is a big gathering of brand clubs and sellers of everything relevant of the vintage car passion. With hundreds of stands and stalls, you can be sure to find the parts you need to start your restoration project, to complete your miniature car collection or to find the old book you have been searching for.

Italian Car Passion, Autoworld Museum, Brussels

This week we catch up on rest rest of the cars at the Brussels Autoworld Museum Italian Car Passion show. This show will open until January 31st, so if you are in Europe, it is an impressive display, a special exhibition to “la bella macchina italiana”, featuring some 60 cars ranging from the 50s to this day, representing the most emblematic machines produced by mass manufacturers, renowned coachbuilders or talented craftsmen.

The other day we received an email from one of the organizers, Frank Rameckers, who wrote, “It is always great that visitors appreciated the hard work. For some cars it took me two years to convince the collectors of the cars to lend their car(s) for two months to the museum.”

We told him that the variety and selection was superb, and that he should take the show to New York and LA.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Don’t hold your breath.

The Autoworld Museum in Brussels devoted its last 2015 special exhibition to “la bella macchina italiana”, featuring some 60 cars ranging from the 50s to this day, representing the most emblematic machines produced by mass manufacturers, renowned coachbuilders or talented craftsmen.

In order to provide the visitor with the proper ambiance, a small “piazza” was been recreated as well as the typical narrow streets of an Italian city, with its traditional architecture.

In this exhibit, this Lamborghini Miura, a 1972 P400 SV version, is the link between the prolific 50’s and 60’s and the supercars of today.
