Last week several readers wanted to see some photos of the British and German cars entered in this year’s Mille Miglia. We explained that VeloceToday was primarily dedicated to Italian and French Classics. However, we asked Hugues Vanhoolandt if he could supply a splash of Silver and Green, and presto, in came these magnificent images. What else could we do but run them! [Ed.]

In only four years, the Zoute Grand Prix, Knokke-le-Zoute has become a traditional date on the Belgian calendar of classic car rallies and concours.

Scheduled just before winter sets in, it is a last occasion for enthusiasts to run their beloved classics on a two-day rally on the back roads of Knokke, in the region near the medieval city of Bruges, or to show their treasures at the Concours d’elegance, held at the Royal Zoute Golf Club.

Michael T. Lynch at Pebble Beach 2013

September 5, 2013 By Lynch

One of the things that make the Pebble Beach Concours unique is its special displays. The organizers are able to present exhibitions of exotica no other event can manage. One of them was a group of cars bodied by Carrosserie Vanvooren. Founded by Achille Vanvooren in suburban Paris in 1910, the firm was taken over in 1919 by Marius Daste, who guided it through its golden era of the 20s and 30s when it became known for its high quality work on luxury marques, especially Bugatti, Delage, Rolls/Bentley and Hispano Suiza. The French arm of the last company was not far from the Vanvrooen atelier. The magnificent H-S seen here is a J12 Vanvooren Cabriolet entered by Robert M. Lee. Note the sophisticated shape that belies the size of the car and the contrasting coachlines that stand in relief from the remainder of the body. Five of the eight entries in the class were Hispano-Suizas. Credit MTL

Third Annual Zoute Grand Prix, Belgium

October 5-7, 2012

For the third consecutive year, the city of Knokke in Belgium presented the Zoute Grand Prix, consisting of a two day rally for cars built between 1920 and 1965, plus a Concours d’Elégance and a Parade of modern GT and Supercars.

Knokke is a chic resort on the Belgian coast about ten miles away from Bruges. Often called the Venice of the North, it is one of the best-preserved medieval cities with over 600 years of history.

The Zoute Grand Prix is growing every year and in 2013, a vintage car auction held by Bonhams is to be added to the activities.

Despite the damp conditions, the rally drew 150 participants who traveled more than 160 miles per day on the picturesque roads of Flanders. On each day, the start and arrival point was located at the King Albert Place at Knokke-le-Zoute.

The sun was back for the Concours d’Elégance held on the Fairway 1 of the Royal Zoute Golf Club. Many classic automobiles from the major Belgian and Dutch collections were on display. More information can be found at Zoutegrandprix.be

Here are a few of the images from the weekend.

Despite the damp conditions of the rally, this Delahaye 135 is having a good run.
