Milano Autoclassica, held between March 18 and 20, is a rather recent event for Milano but it has grown every year. This year the show attracted more than 50,000 visitors.

It is held in Milano Rho Fiera complex, and easily reached also by underground or train.

Inside there is a huge space for car exhibition, dealers and spare parts and also a small outdoor circuit for test drives.

As usual many Italian old cars exhibited by dealers and clubs, and an auction by Pananti with a few interesting cars and automobilia. Below, only a few of the many cars and items that were on display this year.

Italian Car Passion, Autoworld Museum, Brussels

This week we catch up on rest rest of the cars at the Brussels Autoworld Museum Italian Car Passion show. This show will open until January 31st, so if you are in Europe, it is an impressive display, a special exhibition to “la bella macchina italiana”, featuring some 60 cars ranging from the 50s to this day, representing the most emblematic machines produced by mass manufacturers, renowned coachbuilders or talented craftsmen.

The other day we received an email from one of the organizers, Frank Rameckers, who wrote, “It is always great that visitors appreciated the hard work. For some cars it took me two years to convince the collectors of the cars to lend their car(s) for two months to the museum.”

We told him that the variety and selection was superb, and that he should take the show to New York and LA.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Don’t hold your breath.

Italian Car Passion, Autoworld Museum, Brussels

The Autoworld Museum in Brussels devoted its last 2015 special exhibition to “la bella macchina italiana”, featuring some 60 cars ranging from the 50s to this day, representing the most emblematic machines produced by mass manufacturers, renowned coachbuilders or talented craftsmen.

In order to provide the visitor with the proper ambiance, a small “piazza” was been recreated as well as the typical narrow streets of an Italian city, with its traditional architecture.

In this exhibit, this Lamborghini Miura, a 1972 P400 SV version, is the link between the prolific 50’s and 60’s and the supercars of today.

Arriving at the Bayonet and Blackhorse golf course in Seaside-Monterey on a beautiful Saturday morning in August, I wondered:
– How did they get a thousand cars so perfectly in positon that early in the morning?
-How did a country the size of Arizona come to make so many desirable cars?
-Just why are Italian cars so desirable? [Read more…] about Concorso Italiano 2015

Brandes Elitch & Hugues Vanhoolandt at Concorso Italiano

Alfa intro at Concorso: The pundits are quick to dismiss Alfa’s return to the US, but they would be wise to observe what has happened at Maserati, which went from selling perhaps 2000 cars worldwide to now selling perhaps ten times that just in the US!

Back in 1984, I got a call from a friend, Joe Duray, who had just found a Maserati 3500 for sale in the local paper. Back in those pre-Internet days, that was how you found things, along with going to swap meets and taking Hemmings Motor News. We went to look at it and he bought it. The car was unmolested and totally original. It ran, but had no brakes. [Read more…] about Brandes Elitch & Hugues Vanhoolandt at Concorso Italiano

Milan Autoclassica 2014

Fiat 500 Club Italia with love.

Story and Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

This is a rather new event for Milano, the city which will host the World Expo 2015. But every year the success grows and the number and quality of the cars increases. The 2014 show featured more car restorers, many dealers and the usual owner clubs.

Notably, I have seen a lot of old Italian cars. But at this show, I found a few I had never seen before!

Best of France and Italy, 2013

November 14, 2013 By pete

Vintage Alfa racer owned by Brandon Adrian. The full history of this time capsule was on the placard.

Story and photos by Richard Bartholomew

November 3, 2013

Woodley Park is a vast green expanse of grass near a large earthen dam that is part of the water control system that brought water to parched Los Angeles in the 1920s. There are frequent car shows there but for lovers of Italian and French cars this is one of the best.
Why? First because it’s free and second because it brings out lots of cars that aren’t spiffy enough to be in a concours but still damned interesting. Cars on their way to glory, one might say.

Lancia Appia Sedan, Series I or II owned by Tina Byrd.

In the French category, there were Simcas, Citroens, Renaults (including two Caravelle convertibles which are surprisingly elegant cars considering they sold new for under $3000) Facel Vegas from the magnificent Facel II to the Facellias, a Matra Djet, a half dozen Renault Turbo I and Turbo II pocket rockets.

But most of the French cars seemed postwar, in contrast to this event in the past, when there were half a dozen prewar cars. (Could it be the prewar cars are now too nicely restored to show?) Oddly, right in the middle of the French offerings was a Packard which they said was bodied by Kellner, but except for a sharp crease in the rear fenders and a very rakish second windscreen, we couldn’t see much Euro influence.

Delightful, imaginative, and probably stock color scheme for this 2CV.

MAD about Monterey

August 22, 2012 By pete

Mary Ann Dickinson (MAD) eyes Monterey

Check out this 1938 Lancia Aprilia Sport Aerodinamica, a modern reconstruction of a pre-war car. Andrea Zagato built this one in recognition of his father’s original design, following the images from old photographs as there is no other record of the car. It is a sleek beauty, with lines way ahead of its time.

Every August we all trek to the Monterey peninsula in California for the Holy Grail of vintage car events, which have grown beyond control over the years like an abandoned garden zucchini. It is now a plethora of car shows, auctions, races, exhibitions and collector markets, all occurring in the same frantic week. And this car fun is pricey; attending Monterey has become a compulsory – and expensive – pilgrimage.

Best of France and Italy 2011

November 23, 2011 By pete

One of our favorite shows is the “Best of France and Italy”, held every year on the grounds of Woodley Park in the L.A. area. It is low key, a true enthusiasts gathering, and brings out a great variety of unusual French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian and Czechoslovakian cars. Don Hodgdon was there for us.[Ed.]

Story and photos by Don Hodgdon

Rain was falling when I woke up Sunday morning, but it passed through quickly and I left Santa Barbara under sunny skies. I had thought twice about heading down to Woodley Park, having my doubts that anyone would show up. While the numbers were down from past years, considering the rain there was a good group of cars. Alfas and Fiats, along with a healthy group of Citroens made up the bulk of the show, and I think there were almost as many Tatras (3) as there were Ferraris.

November 7, 2010

On a chilly but sunny early Sunday morning in Van Nuys, CA a handful of volunteers distribute signs and set out cones as the first of the Alfa Romeos, Fiats and Citroens start to roll in. All is chaos as my husband Chuck has the maps and he is about ½ mile down the road doing something under the hood of his 1955 Citroen Traction Avant. Lancia Appia Zagato third series. Photo by Carl Goodwin.

Once every fall, before the weather gets too cold, Dr. Ray Boniface stages a car show benefit for breast cancer research. It’s probably the most interesting show in the Cleveland area, with better cars and a nicer venue than the local British, Italian or German Car Shows.
