Terre di Canossa Rally 2025

May 26, 2025 By pete

Story and photos courtesy Joe Hurwich and Friends

On May 6, 2025, Bob Goldberg and I met at the Rome airport for the beginning of the Terre di Canossa regularity rally of 600km on May 9. The rally started in Punta Ala, but we stayed overnight Tuesday about halfway in Porto Santo Stefano. By luck, this was a real find. Porto Santo Stefano is on a small island on the Mediterranean in a beautiful bay, and our hotel was right on the sea. Our rooms were less than 10’ from the ocean. I don’t know what they do when it is high tide.

Making the Big Time…

Hot on the heels of Allen R. Kuhn’s announcement that he’ll be appearing on a California PBS special on Paramount Ranch comes a note from Joe Hurwich, who told us that he had just appeared on CBS Sunday Morning on February 2 in a segment about the Mille Miglia. Story by Joe Hurwich

From the Archives, July 2024

The Mille Miglia (1000 Miglia) is or should be a bucket list item for all car guys. I have been fortunate to participate 5 times now, including June 2024. This year the event was held from June 11 to June 15, and joining me as my co-driver was a good friend and avid Alfa Romeo driver, Mike Ingegno. We made a good team and switched often between driving and navigating. For those who don’t know, navigating is probably harder than driving. [Read more…] about Joe Hurwich on the 2014 Mille Miglia

On June 13th Bob Goldberg (co driver) and I started the Mille Miglia in my 1931 Aston Martin Le Mans; it was my 4th time and his 1st. My 1st Mille was in 2018 in a 1938 MG SA, then in 2019 with an original Mille car-a 1957 Fiat 600 (1st car to start the race in 1957 – this car has finished 5 Mille’s since I bought it in 2017) and in 2021 with my Aston Martin which was covered in VeloceToday.

An Alfa on the 1000 Miglia Warm Up

November 28, 2022 By pete

Warming up for the 1000 Miglia.

Last time we heard from Joe Hurwich was when he returned from the 2021 Mille Miglia and the Gran Premio Nuvolari in Italy where he drove his superb Aston Martin. Last month, he caught the Mille Miglia event right here in the good ol’ U.S., where the organizers set up a Mille Miglia warm up event in Northern Virginia. They figure if you and your car can do 500 miles here, doing the 1000 miles in Italy is feasible. Joe took from his stable a more comfortable car this time, and Alfa to boot. -Ed.

In October 2022, I shipped my 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS to my cousins’ house in Bethesda, Maryland and then drove the 50 miles to the start of the 1000 Miglia Warm Up in Middleburg, VA on October 18th.

An Aston Martin on the Mille Miglia

November 8, 2021 By pete

By Joe Hurwich
Color images by a variety of photographers. Thank you all!

It started in the summer of 2020. I found a car online that I thought would be great for the Mille Miglia – a 1931 Aston Martin. There were a couple of problems though. The car was in England and Covid 19 was rampant. I negotiated a bit, and we struck a deal, subject to an inspection. [Read more…] about An Aston Martin on the Mille Miglia
