Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, 2023

Story and photos by Brandes Elitch

“There is nothing more worthless than last year’s racecar.” Steve Earle, circa 1974

In this, the 49th year of racing at Laguna Seca, there were more than 400 race cars in 14 classes. It marks the return of Formula 5000 cars for the first time since 2018. We should note that the track has made significant (and expensive) improvements including a new track surface, which must be very good news to the drivers! It seems that the track is now firing on all cylinders, a very good thing indeed.

Michael Lynch honors Steve Earle (2009)

In the Americas, the only place you can see sights like this is at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. Juan Manual Fangio and Sir Jackie Stewart warm up an Alfa 159 and P3 respectively, before a demonstration run in 1985 that included Phil Hill in an Alfa P2. Credit: General Racing

Last Sunday evening, an era in American motor racing ended. At the traditional prize giving ceremony at the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Steven J. Earle, by far the most influential person in U.S. vintage racing, announced that the 36-year old Rolex Monterey Historics, which he founded in 1974, was ending.

2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

September 5, 2017 By pete

Story and Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

This year was a very special year for Laguna Seca as it celebrated the 60th anniversary of its creation. The ‘Racing Through the Decades’ display provided a walk down memory lane of some of the most famous cars that have raced here since 1957, including the first and the last cars to win professionally at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Shakeup for Laguna’s Sixtieth Anniversary

August 1, 2017 By pete

“Laguna Seca is sacred ground.”
Richard Varner, CFO, MotoAmerica

Story by Brandes Elitch

As Laguna Seca is about to celebrate their Sixtieth Anniversary, there are major political developments within the management of the facility that appear to give Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) a three-year contract to manage the raceway.

And that’s important, for the health of Laguna Seca depends a great deal on the continued support of vintage car racing during the week. And, while there are a few dozen historic car races worldwide, arguably, after sixty years of hosting vintage car racing, the track at Laguna Seca has more history than any other similar venue in the U.S.

Gallery Vanhoolandt: Rolex Motorsports Reunion

September 2, 2014 By pete

In the Paddock was a small gathering of outstanding Maseratis that includes this 1928 Tipo 26B which is considered to be one of the oldest running Maseratis, if not the oldest. Behind it is the Fiat which served Maserati to transport their F1s and Sports cars throughout Europe between 1952 and 1957.

Barbarian at the Gate

August 29, 2012 By Wally

Betcha didn't think we'd run this photo....

Dear Boss,

I took a little trip up the Coast to Monterey, so as promised, I thought I’d drop a note with a few images. I selected a big ol’Chrysler 300 for the trip, and arrived in my secret low cost no-tell motel in five hours.

On Wednesday I set off for the Embassy Suites and set up my booth at Automobilia, a sort of emporium for the flora and fauna of the automotive world– posters, model cars, clothes, old books (and new books). I was pleased to be in a booth next to Mike Rabin who is famous for making wheel discs He had a great sense of humor, especially considering he had to endure hearing my sales pitch at least 100 times. Finally he got to where he would interrupt my pitch to a new client, saying “It’s getting deeper.”

“Best Monterey Ever”… Lynch Wraps Up Holy Week

September 1, 2010 By Lynch

This image shows the setting of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as well as any I've seen. Simon Moore brings his Alfa 8C2900A over the ramp in front of the crowd as part of the 100 Years of Alfa festivities. The show itself is in the background with Stillwater Cove lapping at its edges. The white sand beach in the far distance is Carmel and the Santa Lucia Range runs East along the valley of the Carmel River. Credit: Kimball Studios/Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
