A Lifetime of Cars of a Lifetime

October 31, 2017 By pete

From the archives October 14, 2014

Steve Snyder, a fixture in the American Lancia Club for decades, reprinted the club publication originally published in 1977 as “the Aurelia Issue.” Steve asked if I could deliver a copy locally, which took me to the residence of Mr. G., a long time Lancia owner who kindly invited me inside his home. When I asked about some Bugatti pictures on the wall, he related the history of his life with cars, and has agreed to share it with our readers, as follows. A Little on Lancia Track Day

April 26, 2016 By pete

All the way from Germany only to run into some hail. But it didn't last.

From Germany, this Aurelia is gorgeous in any weather..

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I took a quick trip to Goodwood the morning of April 16 as the Lancia Motor Club were having their annual track day. Nothing much to report other than lots of Fulvias but only one Intergrale. The event used to be an Intergrale fest. Typical spring weather with sun, rain and then hail. We drove the Alfa GT and stayed dry and un-pummeled while the Lancias braved the hail.

There are a few questions for our Lancistas below, perhaps you can help identify a couple of models.

A Lifetime of Cars of a Lifetime: Bugatti T57

The Bugatti T57 in 1955 beside the Meuse river in Verdun, France.

By Brandes Elitch

“I was fortunate enough to live in a time when, if you were willing to tinker with your car, there was a lot of neat stuff to be had. But you were on your own though.”

Recently, Steve Snyder, a fixture in the American Lancia Club for decades, reprinted the club publication originally published in 1977 as “the Aurelia Issue.” (https://velocetoday.com/lanciana-and-friends/) This year, he added more recent material, which brought it to 94 pages. This would be a must-have for any Lancisti. Steve has a few copies for sale; you can contact him at jsteve34@att.net. Steve asked me to deliver a copy locally, which took me to the residence of Mr. G., who kindly invited me inside his home. When I asked about some pictures on the wall, he related the history of his life with cars, and has agreed to share it with our readers, as follows: [Read more…] about A Lifetime of Cars of a Lifetime: Bugatti T57

Lonely Lancia

December 1, 2010 By pete

Dr. Howard Moon in his Lancia B20, neither lost nor lonely. Pretty happy in fact. Photographer, time and place unknown. But a nice photo to illustrate Montague's story.

By Montague Gammon III

Hard on the brakes at well over the speed limit in the left lane of Route 13 on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, I spun the wheel of my slightly tatty Plymouth Horizon and screeched into the break in the median strip.

The Lancia Aurelia B20: An Appreciation PII

July 1, 2009 By pete

An almost perfect example of a fourth series Lancia B20.

An article or three, about the Lancia Aurelia, one of the most significant and important cars of the twentieth century. This week, Lancia’s famous independent suspension systems.

There is no doubt that the Lancia Aurelia B20 was technically advanced when it was introduced in 1951. As we will see, the B20 Aurelias–production-based Grand Turismos– won the Targa Florio outright and nearly won the Mille Miglia, largely due to the successful implementation of its four wheel suspension and transaxle.

As successful as it was, however, when reviewing the Lancia B20 suspension, two questions arise. Why did the Series 4-6 B20s series use de Dion type rear suspension, why with leaf springs, and secondly, why did Jano continue to use the somewhat antiquated sliding pillar front suspension?

Lancia Aurelia B20: An Appreciation PI

An article or three, about the Lancia Aurelia, one of the most significant and important cars of the twentieth century. This week, origins and engines.

“The Lancia B20: One of the most significant automobiles of the century of the automobile.”
Who said that?
Maybe it has been written or spoken at some time in the past, distant or otherwise.
Maybe it hasn’t.
So we’ll say it here, loud and clear. You can quote us: The Lancia Aurelia is one of the ten most significant automobiles of the twentieth century, and therefore of all time.

If a 1951 production car with a platform chassis, all independent suspension, four speed transaxle, inboard rear brakes, aluminum V-6 engine confined within the parameters of one of the most beautiful bodies ever envisioned doesn’t mean anything to you, you’re on the wrong website.

Let it also be known that the Aurelia B20, which is our focus here, is a most complex car, each one of the 3,871 coupes virtually hand built, and model lines are confusing. There is engineering excellence with constant changes and as you will see, nothing is as simple as it seems.

The Aurelia story begins with the untimely death at age 55 of the firm’s founder, Vincenzo Lancia, in February 1937. At his side at death, his capable and intelligent widow Adele took control of the firm and steered it through the war years. It is doubtful that this remarkable woman ever received the full credit due her. Mrs. Lancia kept the firm alive until she handed it over to her very able son Gianni.

A Car Life, by Larry Crane

The Crane B20 near the top of the Stelvio Pass in northern Italy in an attempt to duplicate a photo in the 1955 Lancia calendar.

“Of all the cars you’ve owned, which would you like to have back?” Always a popular question from friends who have most of their life’s income carefully invested rather than using it for an endless string of automotive experiences and adventures.
