The Capstone

The Pebble Beach Concours is the emotional finish of Holy Week on the Monterey Peninsula. Events continue into the next week, but none can match the feeling of climax that the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance provides.

If your pilgrimage is five days or longer, the fall days are losing enough sunlight that it seems one is leaving in the summer and returning home in fall. Certainly, it is clear that another year has passed. [Read more…] about Pebble Beach, 2016 by Michael T. Lynch

Sunday morning, 6 am, the cars are waiting to be placed on the Pebble Beach lawn. Here is another creation of Michelotti, also on Fiat 1100 chassis, and shown at the 1953 Turin Auto Show but this time the coachbuilder is Vignale. It is back to the Pebble Beach Concours 61 years after its first appearance here.

Up early and stay late; every year Hugues Vanhoolandt does this during the Pebble Beach Concours to find a way to avoid the constant congestion of people who quite naturally get in the way of a good photo. Can’t blame the crowds, after all, they want to see the cars up close as well! His long hours and hard work resulted in the photos below. If your pilgrimage is five days or longer, the fall days are losing enough sunlight that it seems one is leaving in the summer and returning home in fall. Certainly, it is clear that another year has passed.

In the old days that would bother me. I used to think of the missed opportunities of the year gone by. The fact that the car in the back of my roofer’s shop didn’t turn out to be a round-door Wombat that I could buy for a fraction of its market value; the fact that another year had slipped away without taking part in the Monterey Historic Automobile Races as a participant, etc. I also liked to bitch about how many of my old buddies from years gone by were priced out of attending, more every year. In its 66th year, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was celebrating among other things the Ford GT40, Chapron, Delahaye, Bizzarrini and the centennial of BMW.

But the Concours is not just a gathering of cars on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
For the past twelve years there was also a Tour a few days before the Concours itself, where people can enjoy the cars in motion. Sadly, this year, the Tour had to be shortened due to the forest fires down Highway 1 towards Big Sur. Subsequently, the Tour was not counting for the concours and many cars did not show on Thursday.

Nevertheless, we can say that this year Concours was again of very high quality and we can’t wait to discover what will be celebrated at Pebble Beach in 2017!

[In his concurrent report from Pebble Beach, Michael T. Lynch discusses many of the below cars in detail…Ed.]

Fashionable French

Delahaye was one of the featured make and Chapron was the highlighted coachbuilder. That is why you have here a 1947 Delahaye 175 S Chapron Le Dandy cabriolet and 1949 Delahaye 135 M Chapron cabriolet, the last one listed in the Postwar Preservation Class.

Lynch Picks the Best of Monterey

September 8, 2015 By pete

At the risk of having my mailbox overflow with hate mail from Bugatti fans, the pinnacle of prewar sports cars is the Alfa 8C2900B. Luigi Chinetti, who owned one, said they were much more delicate mechanically than the 8C 2300s which he considered bullet proof, but that can be forgiven when you consider how they look. This is Bob Lee’s example in the Designs by Carrozzeria Touring Class. When new, the metal filets and straked spats were not on this car, but were used on some 8Cs. The top spears and running board trim are as original.

A few of our favorite things….

The aging historian and Vicki have talked for years about cutting back during Holy Week, and to some extent we did. I looked back at an old day timer and saw that we once did 37 events during the week. Back when we did the two weekends of vintage racing and everything in between, we started dropping things. We never did any of the dawn patrols at either the Pebble Tour or Pebble itself, although we have been there for the beginning of the Tour one year when we had a ride in it and it was great. Built in 1937 as a Grand Prix race car, this Delahaye remained hidden in the French countryside during WWII. In 1946, it received this spectacular body by Franay and was shown at the 1946 Paris Motor Show. It was one of the favorite for the Best of Show award.

2015 Pebble Beach Tour & Concours d’Elegance: Click to ENLARGE

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance had its 65th edition this year. It marks the end of the Monterey week and is for many people the most awaited event. For photographers, it is also the most exhausting day of the week because one must be at 6 am on the fairway to have a chance to take some clean shots before the crowd invades the golf course.
