The Racing Bugs

September 1, 2010 By hugues

Sandy Leith pushing hard with his 1931 Type 37. Leith, who is the Registrar of the American Bugatti Club, tell us about his car: My car was the second-to-last T37 built. It was bought by a New York banker on vacation, Elgood Lufkin, in Paris who brought it home with him. After one or two more owners and an engine blow-up in early ARCA competition, it received the 4-cylinder, Ford B engine in 1935 and raced as the 'Scrambling Egg' Bugatti-Ford special with the ARCA until 1940 when it disappeared. I found it in 1995 and have kept it, essentially, as found.

7th Monte Carlo Historic Grand Prix

May 26, 2010 By hugues

The Pre 1975 F1 GP cars race was the occasion to see a squadron of Tecno F1 cars, this one, a PA123 of 1972, owned and driven by ‘Nanni’ Galli himself who drove that car in period.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

For the 7th time, Monaco held the Historic Grand Prix on May 1st and 2nd. This author has been to almost every major vintage race event in the world, and believes that the Monaco Historic Grand Prix is an absolute must for every motosports fan. There are eight races, ranging from 1929 to 1984, and nowhere else can you be so close to the action. Surely more fun than the actual Grand Prix which takes place two weeks later. Goodwood the Great

October 14, 2009 By hugues

What makes Goodwood great. The cars, the pits, the clothes, the drivers, the backdrop, are all presented with relentless historical accuracy. Then they go out and race like hell.

Text by Pete Vack

Goodwood’s history has a very Italianate connection. The 9th Duke of Richmond better known as “Freddie” March, was an engineer and engaged in coach building in a business arrangement with Kevill-Davies.

Lancia Augusta March.

Their favorite subjects were Lancias, and the firm produced a number of sporting Lancia Augustas and Aprilias in the 1930s. In 1936, a hill climb was held for a small group of Lancia owners on the grounds of the March’s estate in West Sussex. Freddie reportedly won, of course. The fun was short lived as war was just around the corner. The March’s backyard became an airfield during WWII, and being only 60 miles south of London, served as a base for the Battle of Britain. Hugues Vanhoolandt at Monterey

September 1, 2009 By hugues

After winning Best of Show Award at Carmel on Tuesday, Jon Shirley and his 250 TR s/n 0666 had a moment in the corkscrew on Saturday.

With Porsche as the featured marque at this year’s 36th Monterey Historic Automobile Races, and more than 145 cars from Stuttgart on a field of 450 race cars, non-Porsche fans could fear to be bored. But, as always at the Monterey Historics, there was enough for everyone, French and Italian enthusiasts included. Here is my selection for VeloceToday.
