July 21, 2010 By hugues

Fantastic imagery from our man Hugues Vanhoolandt at the LeMans Classic, July 9-11th 2010. Next week the French–

Iso Grifo and a 250LM taking it all very seriously.

Too late braking for this Bizzarrini A3C pushing the limits.

In the race for Le Mans cars between 1923 and 1939, this Alfa Romeo 8C was one of the quickest on the track, here overtaking the Simca 8 driven by no less than Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, double winner in 1978 and 1980.

Ferrari vs Ford battle revisited in the race for 1962 to 1965 cars. And like in period, it was Ford who took the honours as Christian Gläsel and his GT40 won the three heats.

Overall winner of Grid 3 races after aggregate results was the Maserati T61 Birdcage of German drivers Willi Balz and Frank Stippler.

Abarth Simca 1300 was always competitive at Le Mans.

1960 Osca 1600 GT Zagato.

The last real Le Mans start took place in 1969 and was then abandoned for safety reasons, most of the drivers not taking time to fasten their seat belts.

After getting into the cars, the main thing is to arrive safe at the 1st corner. But sometimes the track is not wide enough!

Rebel Rebel at LeMans. Le Mans Classic is not only about races. Ferrari Classiche showed some of their most beautiful pieces of history.

This Ecurie Francorchamps Daytona placed 12th overall in 1975 at LeMans.

Grid 6 covered the 1972-1979 period. 512 BB LMs were a common sight in those days.

Nicolas Zapata, from Mexico, and his Ferrari 500/625 TR spider Scaglietti were regular entrants in the Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge.

Nicolas and Henri Chambon finished 2nd of Grid 2 only 22 seconds behind a Jaguar D-Type. Their Maserati 300 S is seen here passing the Dunlop bridge.

It was Ferrari vs Aston Martin at the start of the 1st heat, for cars 1957-61, here led by the Dino 246S spider Fantuzzi of Leventis/Fisken/Verdon-Roe.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Zagato hounded by hungry Porsches.

And that's about it until next week when we'll bring you the French at LeMans.

    Mr. Vanhoolandt,
These are fantastic action pix of a great event! I attended the 24hrs as a young enthusiast back in the ’70’s, and finally in 2006, attended the LeMans Classic…got to drive the circuit and watch so much awesome historic car racing! The car park, racing car show, and museum are excellent. This retro event is mandatory for all you LM buffs! At least one of every rare car that you lusted after is in attendance! Get all your tickets and passes early, as this event is very popular on the continent.

The beauty of the LeMans Classic goes back to when the race cars could be driven on the street.
