Tony Pompeo, Cisitalia, and the Colli Roselli Fiat

May 28, 2014 By pete

Dino Brunori is the author of “Nardi, a Fast Life“, and has often contributed articles to VeloceToday. He is one of the leading experts in Italian sports cars and owns one of the two remaining Roselli Colli Sport road versions. After he read last week’s article on the Roselli Colli, he added his considerable knowledge of how the car came to be, and why so many think it is a Cisitalia. Here is his report. [Ed.]

By Dino Brunori

Hi Pete, the article is very good. The funny thing is that both of you and the readers were right for opposite reasons. Plus, the real story is even more tantalizing.

The car is a Fiat Roselli with body built by Carrozzeria Colli.

Let me do a short recap of the story of Colli and the other actors named in the article for your readers because there are some mistakes. [Read more…] about Tony Pompeo, Cisitalia, and the Colli Roselli Fiat

Bodacious Bucciali Part 1: A Brief Moment in History

May 28, 2014 By pete

This is the first in a series of three articles on the Bucciali, which will include this brief history by Wallace Wyss and the VeloceToday staff. Next week Wyss writes of the American effort to create a Bucciali cover car, and the third part, by the Editor, will address the Dutch Bucciali ‘inspiration’ as envisioned by an amazing artist by the name of Bart de Vries, who generously gave us an exclusive interview. [Ed.]

By Wallace Wyss

In the Beginning there was Bucciali

The main impetus behind the Bucciali marque was Albert ‘Buc’ Bucciali, born in the city of Arras on the France in 1889, and was the second son to the musician and organ builder, Joseph Bucciali, who, most remarkably, was blind from childhood. Both Albert and his brother Angelo learned their father’s craft, and became talented craftsman as well as musicians. In an interview with Griff Borgeson, Albert Bucciali noted that organ building is “a remarkable school for learning the principles of physics and mechanics.” [Read more…] about Bodacious Bucciali Part 1: A Brief Moment in History

Vanhoolandt at the Monaco Historics and RM Auction

May 28, 2014 By pete

This 1964 Ferrari 1512 brought a little variety in the F1 1500 cc grid, dominated by Lotus and Brabhams. Owned by Lawrence Auriana and driven by Joe Colasacco, it sadly had to retire after one lap.

Back in 1997 the first Historic Grand Prix of Monaco was held to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldi Dynasty, featuring cars that had taken part in the Monaco Grand Prix since its inception in 1929.

Destined to be a unique event, the Automobile Club of Monaco finally decided to organize a second edition in 2000 and since then, every two years, the streets of Monaco are the backdrop for a lesson in history. [Read more…] about Vanhoolandt at the Monaco Historics and RM Auction

The Warren Classic with Jonathan Sharp

May 28, 2014 By pete

Williment-Cobra

Willment-Cobra. Next week we'll have a personal story on this Savonuzzi-designed car that has been through so much. Here it appears at the Warren Classic event.

Story and Photos by Jonathan Sharp

A golf course on a Saturday morning is somewhere I do not as a rule frequent. If the golf course, however, is the location for a display of classic cars then I will make an exception. The golf course in question was the Warren Golf and Country Club in the English county of Essex; the event, the second Warren Classic and Concours. Saturday had dawned wet and windy but by mid-morning the weather had cleared. Unfortunately a few of the cars listed did not show, probably due to the weather, but those owners who did make the effo rt brought along some real gems. I have picked a few of my personal favorites which I hope you will enjoy.

Mystery Car Unraveled

May 20, 2014 By pete

Side view of our Mystery Car...the photographer couldn't recall the name of the car or what year, but he did remember his girlfriend, who is standing behind it.

Sometimes, it’s still fun….

Today we have almost dozens of books about rare Italian cars; multiple Internet sources which leave no digit unmolested, no photo left unseen; dozens of seasoned veterans with years of experience identifying, finding, buying, and selling rare Italian cars, and then wonderful resources for information such as the REVS and IMRRC.
All of this means that there are few true mystery cars left out there – the wealth of resources has taken much of the fun away from finding a photo of a car one can’t identify.

Still, once in a while one comes up that we find it hard to figure. When this happens, we put the image up on VeloceToday and we are sure to find the right answer. Or so we hope.

Gauld at the Monaco Historics

May 13, 2014 By pete

Derek Hill sits in the Ferrari Dino his dad Phil used to win the Italian Grand Prix fifty-four years ago.

Story and Photos by Graham Gauld

You have got to hand it to them; the Monaco Automobile Club put on a real spectacle with their bi-annual Monaco Historic event held last weekend. Monaco has been a gem in on the International racing scene since 1927 when William-Grover Williams, an Englishman in Monaco, won the first Monaco Grand Prix in his Bugatti. This week it was time to forget about the modern computers on wheels that are todays F1 cars and wallow in the nostalgia of racing in the past. The Monaco event always attracts interesting cars and people; let’s meet some of them. [Read more…] about Gauld at the Monaco Historics
