The fact the Automobile Club of Monaco actually ran their Grand Prix Historique last weekend was a brave and expensive effort. The Covid 19 precautions meant that they only allowed a limited number of Monaco residents to fill up some of the places in the otherwise empty stands.

The Monaco Historic Grand Prix meeting (May 11-13) has come and gone and, my, how time flies when you are having fun. As readers will know, I go to those events, never do reportage on the races, but keep looking for oddities and interesting sidelights that the others may not have noticed. Monaco this year was a rich source of items so let’s start off with an oddity, the Assegai Formula 1 car. [Read more…] about Monaco Historic Grand Prix 2018

First run in 1929, the Monaco Grand Prix for Grand Prix cars has been accompanied by the Historic Grand Prix since 1997. The Historics are held every two years, and two weeks before the F1 event.

This year was the 10th edition, held on May 14-15 and some 250 cars were entered in the various classes, ranging from the Prewar Grand Prix cars from 1929 to 1939 to the F1 cars of the 1973-1976 period.

It must be noted that for the first time, the Prewar cars were only demonstrated, not raced, certainly due to the rarity of these cars and the difficulty to repair them. Needless to say that there are not many run off areas in Monaco; even a slight error can have costly consequences, and it is worse when rain occurs, making the track extremely slippery as on Saturday afternoon. But the rain was limited and the races on Sunday were held under a sunny sky.

Now let’s see the on-track action:

This 1964 Ferrari 1512 brought a little variety in the F1 1500 cc grid, dominated by Lotus and Brabhams. Owned by Lawrence Auriana and driven by Joe Colasacco, it sadly had to retire after one lap.

Back in 1997 the first Historic Grand Prix of Monaco was held to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldi Dynasty, featuring cars that had taken part in the Monaco Grand Prix since its inception in 1929.

Destined to be a unique event, the Automobile Club of Monaco finally decided to organize a second edition in 2000 and since then, every two years, the streets of Monaco are the backdrop for a lesson in history. [Read more…] about Vanhoolandt at the Monaco Historics and RM Auction
