The RL was one of Alfa's most successful models, both as a race car and touring car.
In addition to the Targa Florio, the RL won at Mugello, Cremona, and the Coppa
Della Consuma in 1923. (S/N 7145)
The next model was the 1923 Type RL Targa Florio. The type RL (R for Romeo) was a touring model launched in 1921 and built until 1927 in various versions for a total of well over 2,000 cars. It had an in-line six engine with three-liter displacement, still with ohv. The most memorable victory came in the 1923 Targa Florio where it finished 1st and 2nd. It was Alfa's first Targa Florio victory and the cars came to be called the RL Targa Florio. We should note that the first Mille Miglia would not be held until four years later in 1927.
The cars in this Targa Florio sported a green four-leaf clover on a white background. With this victory it would subsequently adorn many an Alfa in the years to come and today is something that every enthusiast associates with
the marque.
Ugo Sivocci garnered the first international win for Alfa Romeo at the 1923
Targa Florio. His RL was adorned with the now famous quadrifolgio.
Vittorio Jano, considered by many as the greatest Italian car designer and certainly the man that designed cars that catapulted Alfa Romeo to fame, had joined the firm in Portello in 1923. One of his first jobs was to design the twin-cam version of the 6C/1750 model. The top of the range model, the 6C/1750 Gran Sport was to begin a stream of successes for Alfa Romeo on the track as well as on the road.
