F1 Exhibition, London

September 2, 2024 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

As it says below, F1 comes to London but only as an exhibition, not as a race. Anyway I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the press launch a few days before the exhibition opened so was able to take in the show without the crowds which will no doubt come in droves. During the press event both Damon Hill and Tim Harvey were present to explain more about the ethos of the exhibition and why it came to London as part three of what will probably be a world tour.

Sir Stirling Moss Service at Westminster

May 13, 2024 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

A service of Thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey is a very rare and special occasion, and not something you would expect to be conducted for a racing driver. Such is the respect held for Sir Stirling Moss, who was recently honored with a service at the Abbey, delayed after his death in 2020 by the pandemic. I found out about this unique happening from a friend, who in an email wrote, ‘Quick, there is going to be a service of Thanksgiving to Sir Stirling Moss at 11am on the 8th May, and it is going to be in Westminster Abbey! Go onto the web site now and see if you can book tickets.”

The multiple joys of Goodwood; in addition to the practice sessions and the 16 races held over three days, the spectators could also enjoy a parade of in excess of 100 Austin Sevens each morning in celebration of the humble baby Austin’s centenary. A parade in commemoration of the late great Graham Hill, it being sixty years since he won his first Formula One World Championship, and a parade in celebration of 75 years of Ferrari.

Goodwood Revival, 2021: The Races

October 4, 2021 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

It has been said before, with so much to see and do, it would be easy to spend a very full day at the Goodwood Revival and not see a race. But that would be a shame and you would miss some excellent racing; with first class grids and proper races, this is not a beauty parade. And it’s a time machine in which you can choose the time and place you wish to be transported. Here are the races:

Goodwood Revival 2021, Part 1

Goodwood, 17-19 September
‘The Goodwood Revival, a magical step back in time’ is a very apt description, but back in the 50s and 60s surely people were not this polite, or this friendly? The politeness arrives the minute you walk through the main gate, no cancel that, it starts the minute you drive into the car parks. Everyone greets you with a smile and that is usual followed with a ‘Good morning, Sir/Madam.’ Even the people controlling the pedestrian crossing seem to be blowing their whistles in a friendly manner.

There is no doubt about it, the workers, the spectators and the drivers were was just glad to be back at Goodwood; you only have to look at the faces to see that. Monday mornings return us to the real world of 2021; it is going to come as a bit of a shock.

I think I will stay here for a while longer. [Read more…] about Goodwood Revival 2021, Part 1

Goodwood Driver’s Gallery

July 16, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

As is our custom with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, (this year held on July 6-7) we hung out in the paddock and photographed drivers as well as cars. There are few events where the young rising stars get to mingle with the older drivers and the atmosphere is always friendly.

It is probably my age but thank heavens the younger drivers have their names on the waist bands of the race suits as I would be struggling, like many other photographers of my age, to know who they are. [Read more…] about Goodwood Driver’s Gallery
