So Long Goodwood, Until We Meet Again

September 30, 2024 By pete

1939 Parnell Challenger, Goodwood Trophy, entered and driven by Duncan Ricketts.

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I hope you dear readers will forgive me for one final photographic visit to this years Goodwood Revival; after all it is going to be a long winter without a Goodwood fix.

I seem to have spent a fair amount of time in the Goodwood estate this year, starting with various Sunday morning free breakfast club meetings at the circuit, members’ only test days prior to the 81st members’ meeting in April, The Festival of Speed in July, a family club day in the August sun (sun was a rare occurrence this year) also at the house, and of course the amazing Revival in September, and amazing it was, even though I got soaked far too often. So here’s to next year starting with the 82nd Members’ Meeting in April. Roll on spring.

2023 Freddie March Spirit of Aviation

January 15, 2024 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

The 2023 Freddie March Spirit of Aviation (as differentiated from the Freddie March Memorial Race for automobiles) was again held as part of the Goodwood Revival on September 13th. For VeloceToday, this is not a time sensitive event, and allows us to publish this unusual article at any time. And time just flies by…

Whilst it would be very easy for a UK-based aviation event to fill a whole airfield with warbirds of the fighter and bomber variety, it is the mix of aircraft found at Goodwood that makes the Freddie March event so special. [Read more…] about 2023 Freddie March Spirit of Aviation

Goodwood: Will it last?

Til next year, Arturo….we hope.

Goodwood: The showcase of our passion…

There is nothing like Goodwood in the world; in our humble opinion and that of our two veteran race correspondents, Jonathan Sharp and Hugues Vanhoolandt, Goodwood puts on the three (Member’s Meeting, Festival of Speed, and the Goodwood Revival) greatest classic motoring events on earth and supreme showcases for our passion.

…is in trouble…

Every year we take for granted the long list of famous drivers, spectacular cars, shows, displays and outstanding racing, and assume it will always be there, bigger and better. But that may not always be the case. Due to the cancellation of all three of this year’s events, Goodwood is facing serious financial difficulties. According to the Goodwood Supporters Association, “…social distancing has had a catastrophic impact on our ability to operate. It is a worrying time and we are doing what we can to salvage a future for our events. We rely on our headline events to generate all of our operating profit, their absence places not only future events but even the long-term future of the estate under considerable strain.” [Read more…] about Goodwood: Will it last?

One of Goodwood’s most interesting features year was the theme of the 1959 Tourist Trophy.  If you read Graham Gauld’s post, “I Was There“, you know that Ferrari, Aston Martin and Porsche were all battling for the World Sportscar Championship and any of the three could win. We check out the cars. [Read more…] about Tourist Trophy Revival at Goodwood

Vanhoolandt’s Goodwood Revival

September 19, 2017 By pete

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Ten years after my first visit, my enthusiasm is still at the highest point when comes to the Goodwood Revival. This event remains unique as it combines the thrill of racing on an old style circuit with a stylish atmosphere thanks to the period dress code.

Sharp: Avro Lancaster Bombers (See note 4)

Note 1 Have you ever seen the 1969 film The Battle of Britain ?. The aircraft featured flew in the film and wears the markings that she carried during the filming? The enemy aircraft used in the film came from the Spanish Air Force. The Spanish had initially changed their minds about letting the production company use the HE111 Bombers which had also been re-engined with Merlins. Hamish Mahaddie, who worked for the production company then, spoke to Rolls Royce, who the spoke to the Spanish ambassador in London informing him that if the Spanish refused the request for the aircraft then Rolls Royce would have to think long and hard about supplying spares for the Merlins. He111s at the time were their front line aircraft. The Spanish then agreed! (Jonathan Sharp)

Note 2 A two part race for Austin J40 pedal cars of a type that raced between 1949 and 1966. The racers started the race in the style of Le Mans. They then pedaled for 7 laps (just kidding). They then pedaled from just after the chicane to just in front of the old control building have passed through various chicanes made up of foam.
Austin pedal cars were made in the specially constructed Austin Junior Car Factory at Bargoed in South Wales, which opened on 5 July 1949. It was paid for by Government funds and was run on a not-for-profit basis and purely for the employment of disabled coal miners suffering from the lung disease, pneumoconiosis. They were re-trained and benefited from in-house medical care. (Jonathan Sharp)

Note 3 These are the Dads Army re-enactment group. Dads Army was a hugely successful BBC comedy series filmed in the 1970s. Dads Army was the nickname of the Home Guard, a force set up to defend England early in the war and was made up of those too old to join the regular army. The show is repeated to this day in fact I watched an episode on Saturday night on the BBC and it is still very funny and has not dated. (Jonathan Sharp)

Note 4 7377 Avro Lancaster Bombers were built between 1941 and early 1946, some 3500 were lost during operations. Only two remain in air worthy condition. These are the two. The RAFs Battle of Britain memorial flight’s (BBMF) example PA474 which was built a Broughton in Cheshire in 1945, and the Canadian War Plane Heritage’s Lancaster Mark X which was built at Victory Aircraft in Malton Canada. They are joined by three of the fighters of the BBMF. Hurricane MK11c PZ865. Known as the last of the many, of the 14533 built this was the last. The two Spitfire’s are TE311 a low back Mark LF XVIE and P7350. MKIIa which is the oldest airworthy Spitfire in the World

Goodwood Revival 2014: Hugues Vanhoolandt

September 23, 2014 By pete

50 years ago, a newcomer named Jackie Stewart drove a single-seater for the first time here at Goodwood at the invitation of Ken Tyrrell. On the day, he set the fastest time and secured a contract to run in the inaugural F3 series, which he won. He is here posing with his wife Helen, his son Mark, Mark Webber (left) and John Surtees.

“Off to Goodwood again this weekend, are you? Don’t you get bored seeing the same cars each year?” This is a question often asked of me. The stock answer is no BUT the correct answer should be, “They are not the same cars year after year.” Yes, you do see some old favorites but for every old favorite there is usually something else that you have never seen, or if you had seen it then it was probably a long while ago. As you can see in this Special Edition of VeloceToday, there are plenty of photos and details about the racing at the event. But for me, Goodwood is another chance to meet up with old friends, make new ones, and keep an eye open for things that might have escaped notice or otherwise have been so obscure as to be missed by the many journalists around.

Clark and the E.R.A.

As this year was celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s first World Championship win in 1963, Lord March dedicated the meeting to him. There was a remarkable collection of cars that Jim Clark had raced, and then sent off in a parade round the circuit.

Among the more obscure was the 1936 E.R.A. voiturette R5B originally raced by the Siamese Prince Bira, but also raced for many years by Tony Rolt and journalist John Bolster. Eventually, in 1959, the Honorable Patrick Lindsay, who has been credited as the creator of what we now call historic car racing when he was a director of the well-established auction house of Christies, bought the E.R.A.
