St James’s Motoring Spectacular

Not what I expected to see parked on a street in London in November, but it is not quite what it seems, Courtesy of Mercedes Benz W196 show car.

There once was a time that I could hop down to the waterfront in Brighton and photograph the end of the London to Brighton Veteran Run. But for the past few years the event has become just part of a motoring extravaganza. It is now a key part of the five-day London car week, which kicks off on the Wednesday with the opening of the Royal Automobile Club’s Art of Motoring Exhibition at the Iconic Images Gallery just off of Pall Mall. The week also includes motoring lectures, two major car auctions, the St James’s Motoring Spectacular, the run itself, and the Veteran Car Club’s annual dinner at the Grand Hotel Brighton! Readers Asked: Brits and Germans on the Mille Miglia

Last week several readers wanted to see some photos of the British and German cars entered in this year’s Mille Miglia. We explained that VeloceToday was primarily dedicated to Italian and French Classics. However, we asked Hugues Vanhoolandt if he could supply a splash of Silver and Green, and presto, in came these magnificent images. What else could we do but run them! [Ed.]

1948 Bristol 400 followed by a 1949 HWM Jaguar and a Jaguar XK120.

1954 AC Ace and a 1956 MG A works car, participated in the 1956 Mille Miglia.

This Aston Martin DB3 S, chassis number 5 took part to the original Mille Miglia, driven by Peter Collins. This car also was driven by Salvadori and Moss in its career.

1930 ‘Blower’ Bentley 4.5 liter.

Jaguar did a great effort for this year’s Mille Miglia as they displayed the Ecurie Ecosse Transporter with a C-Type of the same stable …

French Grand Prix of Lyon Revival

99 years, 11 months ago, the Grand Prix of France was held at Lyon. The centenary of the event was held from May 2-4 and our young man in France, Tom Bromehead, gives us a brief of the original event and details of the Revival. [Ed.]

Concept Cars and Aerodynamics, 1917-1940

After the Armistice of 1918 that ended WWI, a number of men who had made a name designing or building aircraft switched their attention to creating automobiles. Some, such as Gabriel Voisin and the brothers Henri and Maurice Farman in France, did so because they needed other products for their factories and/or new challenges for their talents. After he was discharged from the Royal Navy, British inventor and designer Charles Dennistoun Burney sought new activities, following a brilliant wartime career. For the Germans it was pure necessity, as the Treaty of Versailles implied the closure of the German aviation industry and prohibited the Germans to develop airplanes or airships, even for civilian purposes.

Rumpler’s Teardrops
Edmund Rumpler, was an Austrian automotive engineer who was well-known in post-war Germany as the manufacturer of the successful ‘Taube’ (Pigeon), a German warplane based on an original design by Igo Etrich. Rumpler also had experience in automobile design and manufacturing, having worked for Nesselsdorf (later to become Tatra), Daimler and Adler.
