Robert Pauley: engineer, photographer, enthusiast, author

Over the years, we have featured the work of Robert F. Pauley. His color photography has graced our newsletter leads, and enhanced many articles. His contributions to VeloceToday began in 2011 when published a series of articles about “Gilda,” the 1955 Ghia showcar designed by the Italian Giovanni Savonuzzi. This prompted an email response from Pauley, who told me a remarkable story about working with the famous designer while both were employed at the Engineering Building in Chrysler’s Headquarters in Highland Park, Michigan. It was the beginning of a long, fruitful relationship.

Fiats, Panhards, Pegaso, now Simca: The Stinkwheel Story

January 13, 2025 By pete

By Pete Vack and David Beare

From the Archives: It is fitting that exactly five years ago we published this interesting bio about David Beare just as his latest book, The Simca Story, 51 years of cars 1933-1984, is now in print and available. This great little history of Simca will be reviewed shortly.-Ed.

First the name; we have to explain the name for those of us unfamiliar with British jargon. “The name Stinkwheel derives from 1930’s slang amongst motorcyclists for small-capacity, feeble two-stoke powered cyclemotors and autocycles which buzzed noisily but slowly around in a cloud of blue oily smoke- a stinkwheel,” writes Beare. His first two books were histories of such cyclemotors- “The Stinkwheel Sagas.” Thus came the name of the publishing company, which is at the very least, unforgettable. How Stinkwheel went from cyclemotors to Hispano Suiza is another good question. [Read more…] about Fiats, Panhards, Pegaso, now Simca: The Stinkwheel Story

Fiat through OSCA at Concorso

September 5, 2022 By pete

What car?

Photos by Brandes Elitch

Last week we brought you a report from Concorso Italiano, but only published half of the photos supplied by Brandes Elitch. This week we present photos of the Fiats through OSCA and beyond.

And like last week there are a few that are either not identified or incorrectly identified. As Elitch wrote last week, “Because of the informal nature of this show, the cars on display do not have placards that show who the owner is or where they live. This is why we are not able to show the owner’s name in the accompanying pictures.” And which is why we need your help. [Read more…] about Fiat through OSCA at Concorso

Pegasos in New York, 1953

February 7, 2022 By pete

May 23, 1953. The new Pegaso, chassis 0121, poses for a photo at Bridgehampton. Can anyone identify the people? Photo by Robert F. Pauley.

By Pete Vack

With some material from the VeloceToday Archives, April 2017

Not too much mystery about the Pegasos that appeared at Bridgehampton in May of 1953. Two photographers, Robert Pauley and Glen Glendenning were there and photographed two of the Pegasos. Perhaps a mystery was the chassis number of the Z102 model that accompanied the famed “Tea Rose.” That’s where our readers come in! [Read more…] about Pegasos in New York, 1953

Pegaso Exhibtion at Belgium’s Autoworld

November 27, 2018 By pete

Photos and story by Hugues Vanhoolandt

As you know, Pegasos are very rare sports cars that were manufactured in Spain between 1951 and 1956. The main goal of the company was to build trucks, vans and buses for which there was a need in the context of Spain’s economic recovery after the difficult times of the Spanish civil war and WWII. Monterey Round One

August 29, 2017 By pete

Story by Brandes Elitch
Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

The 32nd annual Concorso Italiano was held at the Blackhorse/Bayonet golf course at Fort Ord, California, on August 19, 2017. Originally conceived by Francis Mandarano of the Maserati Information Exchange, this event has been managed since 2009 by Tom McDowell.

Concorso Italiano is probably the largest gathering of Italian special interest and collector cars anywhere in the world. Special features this year were “Seventy Years of Ferrari,” the 50th anniversary of the Maserati Ghibli, and the first part of a three-year celebration of Alfa Romeo, this year featuring the GTV, Giulia, and 4C. I particularly appreciated the interview on the stage with event originator Mandarano, who gave a history of the event and a tribute to Tom Tjaarda, who passed away recently, but was in attendance at previous shows. There was also an interview with Pete Brock, and one of the highlights of the day for me was getting to talk to Pete in person. [Read more…] about Monterey Round One

And How! 4-11: Pegaso in New York

April 11, 2017 By pete

And How! is a new regular feature in VeloceToday, just right for those stories which are too short or too little or news items that don’t qualify as full length articles.

Four Guys at Retro: More from Graham Gauld

February 12, 2015 By pete

This B52 Lancia with Bertone coachwork designed by Michellotti back in 1952.

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

Last week I talked about some of the cars lined up at Retromobile in Paris; I must admit that I mostly walk past the more obvious stands with spectacular cars and items but rather tend to keep an eye open for cars that I have either met before or have interesting back stories, so to speak.

This week I would like to continue with some more observations. Take, for example, the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 long tail that was on show. This was one of the last 33/2’s built. Design work on the Alfa tipo 33 can be traced back to 1964 when Alfa started out to produce a sports racing car around the 1570cc engine they had developed for the Giulia TZ2.

The first real 33 was produced in 1967 and was called the “Periscopio” named after the high periscope air intake behind the driver. It won first time out on a Belgian hill climb. By now it was a 2 liter V8 developed by Carlo Chiti.

Alfa and Autodelta entered the World Constructors Championship the following year and the car shaped up well against Ferrari and Porsche opposition. At Daytona that year Ugo Schuetz and Nino Vaccarella finishing fifth in this actual show car behind three Porsche 907’s and Jerry Titus’s Mustang. More importantly it was ahead of the other two 33/2 factory cars of Mario Andretti and Mario Casoni. This same car was to finish 4th at Le Mans with Ignazio Giunti and Nanni Galli.

The Alfa Romeo 33/2 long tail Daytona named after its fifth place at the 24 Hour race.

Pegaso Z 102

Naturally, VeloceToday includes the Pegaso in our portfolio of strange and wonderful cars that don’t quite fit in the regular scheme of things French or Italian. Pegaso has links to Alfa Romeo, Touring and the Swiss-French-Spanish Hispano Suiza, so it fits well within our borders.

The problem is, or has been, a good lack of information about these cars. They are not only rare, but extremely rare in the U.S., and come to find out, a lot are held dear within the borders of their native country. [Read more…] about Pegaso Z 102

La Jolla Concours

April 18, 2012 By pete

Story and photos by John Wiley

Now in its 8th year, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance returned to the theme of the first show by featuring Italian cars for the 2012 event, held on April 1st. Held in Scripps Park which draws its name from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the ocean front location provided a beautiful backdrop for a variety of Italy’s automotive creations. The weekend featured activities in and around La Jolla starting with a book signing Friday evening, a tour Saturday, a party Saturday night in Scripps Park, and the concours on Sunday.

Maserati-A6G-2000

The 1956 Maserati A6G-2000 Allemano s/n 2125 owned by Jonathan Segal, was awarded Reserve Best in Show next to the Best in Show 1925 Hispano-Suiza H6B Kellner Landaulet. The Maserati also collected Most Elegant Post War Car. Residing in Italy most of its life, s/n 2125 came to the U.S. in 2007 and was recently refinished in the correct original color. Before appearing at La Jolla, the car won Best in Class at Pebble Beach in 2011.

Lamborghini

Malcolm Barksdale’s1966 Lamborghini 350 GT Touring participated in Saturday’s tour and won its class for Italian Sports 1966 – 1985. Found in a small body shop in Marseille France, the car had sat for 25 years while it was debated how best to repair a small dent in the nose of the aluminum Touring Superleggera body. Restored by the Bobileff Motorcar Company of San Diego, the 350 GT now gets exercised regularly on driving events and shown in concours.
