Chantilly Art and Elegance Concours 2024

Every two years, the château and grounds of Chantilly hosts a new edition of the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Concours. It is difficult to find a more beautiful setting to house the most beautiful automobiles of the past and present, especially when the sun is out. This edition already marked the tenth anniversary of the creation of this event which revives the tradition of the elegance concours of the 30s and 50s, when coachbuilders unveiled their latest creations.

Auction at the Mullin

Peter Mullin was a world-class collector of French cars from mainly the pre-war era. His collection was magnificently housed in warehouse that was recreated to represent a car show from the late nineteen thirties, with all the appropriate art deco architectural details. This museum was open to the public. Located in Oxnard, California it was a one and a half hour drive north of Los Angeles, but it was worth traveling to it. Once you entered the museum, it felt as if you were sent back in time to view the car displays of Bugattis, Delahayes, Delages, Voisins and Citroens, each with large advertising banners.

Richard Adatto (with Diana Meredith), in their new book Figoni On Delahaye (read review) allowed us to reflect upon one of the strangest of the already strange French confections of Figoni. Early readers of Road and Track came face to face with a Narwal via the February 1949 cover, and probably never forgot it, even if they couldn’t describe it.

Two weeks ago, Veloce Today brought you the story of David Smith’s Alfa S 11 Corto Spyder Speciale. It will debut on the lawn at The Quail – A Motorsports Gathering, held at the Quail Lodge in Carmel on Friday the 17th of August during the Monterey Peninsula Holy Week. Joining it there will be the imposing Bugatti Type 64 coupé from the Mullin Automotive Museum. The Bugatti has a recently completed body and this is the first time it will be seen. This is how it all came about.

New Museum for French “Grandes Routieres”

There are always a few surprises at the Monterey Historics, and this year was no exception. A few years previously, a very large tent appeared at the Equestrian Center at Pebble Beach, called Retroauto, a collection of about forty vendors of automobilia-artwork, posters, books, models, all the things that you would absolutely need to have if you hit the lottery and had the room to put them. This year, a new tent appeared next door, with two Bugattis inside, cars never before seen in the US. The display announced a new museum opening next year, founded by Peter Mullin.
