Montlhéry Centennial Festival Part 2

October 28, 2024 By pete

A Citroën DS 23 prepared for the rally in a chicane at Montlhéry where its hydropneumatic suspension works wonders!

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

We continue with post war racing at Montlhéry.

After the war, competitions gradually resumed with the main races being the 1000 Kilometers of Paris and the Coupes du Salon, organized in parallel with the Paris Motor Show and the entrants in the Centennial Festival reflected those events. In addition, there were concours shows which attracted more entrants and spectators.

Alpine Factory Tour Part 2: This is Insane!

October 30, 2023 By pete

On the Targa Tasmania

Story by Mark Duder

Read Part 1

My love of Renaults began years ago. I had participating in the West Australian Rally Championships in the 60s and early 70s in a modified Renault R8 with good results and even did the 1970 Repco round Australia in a Renault R16. Of course the ultimate was the A110 Alpine. When I restored one years later, I would find a new friend by the most unusual coincidence.

Alpine Factory Tour, circa 1972 Part 1

October 23, 2023 By pete

A remarkable experience that lasts to this day.

Story and photos by Mark Duder

In 1972 my new wife Margaret and I decided to have a year in Europe for our honeymoon. In those days a line voyage (A line voyage was a simple liner going from Australia to the UK as quick as it could, (21 days), as against a cruise.) from Perth in Western Australia around the bottom of Africa was the way to go.

As was normal in those days for Australians we bought a second hand van in London that had obviously been around Europe a few times and set off.

As a member of the Renault car club of West Australia, I had participated in the West Australian Rally Championships in the 60s and early 70s in a modified Renault R8. Hence, due to my interest in all things Renault and Alpine, I managed to get an invite to the Renault factory in Paris and the Alpine factory in Dieppe. However, upon arrival in Paris, we went to the Renault factory in Billancourt for a tour but when we got there, there were workers protesting at the gate, and we were told by police not to go further. London Classic Car Show, February 24-26 2023

March 6, 2023 By pete

Purposeful from any angle, Alpine A110.

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

The last weekend in February offered a lot of choice for those of us in need of an old car fix. Should I go to St Moritz for the ‘ICE’? (Created to enjoy driving, showing and watching exciting motor cars on the frozen lake!) But have you seen the hotel prices? Maybe Stuttgart for RetroClassics? No more direct flights from my local airport! Madrid for Autoclassica? I do not speak Spanish. Race retro in Stoneleigh in Warwickshire? Been there before. Then how about the London Classic Car Show? Ideal, just a train ride away. So it was off to Olympia in Kensington that I headed.

Michael T. Lynch at Monterey, 2016

August 30, 2016 By pete

For some, the Ferrari 206 S is one of the best looking Ferraris ever. Others think it looks like a P4 left out in the rain to shrink. This one was owned by the Swiss Filipinetti team and ran at Sebring in 1967. At the Nurburgring that year, it had a bad fire and ended up with famous French collector, Pierre Bardinon. Now with the Moghadam collection in Canada.

Another Holy Week has passed on the Monterey Peninsula, and once again, the aging historian and Vicki enjoyed an abbreviated schedule. It consisted only of the Pebble Beach Tour lunch stop in Carmel, The Quail, the Rolex Reunion and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. [Read more…] about Michael T. Lynch at Monterey, 2016

Gauld on the Valescure Concours, French Riviera

Alpine-A110

Christine Dacremont with the pink Alpine 110 she used to race and rally.

By Graham Gauld

Every August I am asked to judge a Concours held at the Valescure Golf Club just behind St. Raphael in the South of France. There is no entry fee and the cars are lined up on the 18th fairway for all to see.

Being a French event, there was a class for Renault Alpines and there was a raft of the factory racing cars including one of the long-tail 1967 Le Mans cars that had been raced at Le Mans. [Read more…] about Gauld on the Valescure Concours, French Riviera

We last engaged Skip Cook as Philippe Defechereux described the Deutsch-Bonnet at Sebring, and Cook’s adventures running a DB coupe at the Le Mans Classic. Cook recently returned to France to drive an Alpine Renault in the California Classic Rallye event, this year held in the French Riviera. Below is his report.

Elitch on Alpines

By Brandy Elitch

Dieppe is a small French port on the English Channel, more famous for its scallops than for its links to the automobile industry (although pre-WWI, the French Grand Prix was held there).
